Hello,
Can anyone help me with information on finding an adjustable chair for my son who is a large 5 yr old to sit on whilst playing the cello. A prtable one would be nice.
Many thanks

My daughter started playing when she was six and a half (she is now nine). She has used a selection of stools, first a foot stool (which we happened to have), then a (four-legged) stool with its legs sawed down and now a stool with its complete legs. The stools were cheap (at the local DIY shop) so we didn't mind about cutting the first one down to size. They are very stable.

Suzuki do an adjustable stool - it's a round stool with a central bit that you turn up and down to adjust it. Have a look on their website - I think there's probably info on there about them, but if not I'm sure you could enquire about them. My daughter's had a go on one, and it's been fine for her (at 4). The stool belongs to her cello teacher's son - he's 8, and it looks like he'll fit on it for many years to come. So it covers a decent range. And it's very sturdy. Bit pricey though (£50). We have an ikea stool, which T's cello teacher sawed down to the right height. We've kept the bits, and she encourages us to stick them back on to make the stool higher when madam needs to sit a bit higher. I think that probably cost less than £10.
Here's the link for british suzuki. Can't see evidence of one of the stools on there, but I'm sure if you contact them they'll be able to give you more info.

There's also a chair called Milo. They're made in two sizes, one for children and one for adults. The legs have screw threads at the top so that you can adjust them to exactly the height and angle you want.

Ikea used to do a really good one, they discontinued it a couple of months back but some stores still have them.

The Milo ones are really good...My teacher has two - one for her little pupils and one for her bigger ones although I think I can sit on the child's one (at 5'3"). I believe they are quite expensive though. They do encourage to sit with the correct posture and I have always found them very comfortable.

When my son started the cello we bought a wooden stool from IKEA for £6 and sawed the legs down to the right height for him.
However my other son is just about to start and we are using an adjustable drum stool.

I agree - have a look at drum stools.
No cello player here but a piano accordionist and they need the right seating height too.
Drum stools have nice fat padded seats, are fully adjustable and the legs fold so they are portable. One should last you ages.
Might be easier in the long run than carving up the family antiques
