I play seven instruments and I would love to take up cello, and then when my Dad wins the lottery he can buy me harp and pay for a harp teacher!
Loads of people say that I shouldn't play so many and just concentrate on one or two; but I love playing loads of different things moderately well and as I don't want a job in music it doesn't bother me.
So, I was just wondering how many instruments you all play, which you prefer and why you took them up in the first place.
Please reply!

i play 4 instruments:
+flute
+piano
+recorder
+irish pennywhistle
but i concentrate on flute because i want to major in that.
piano is just another side instrument which would help me in keyboard work.
the recorder and irish pennywhistle are self taught

hey
i play three, horn, piano and organ.
I also do theory. I think you can play too many instruments, because as you get more serious about playing, you run the risk of being "a jack of all trades" and just simply not having enough time to practice all of them every day!

I play four, the viola, violin, piano and clarinet. The viola and piano are my main ones, and the violin is just something to keep me entertained and the clarinet is the instrument that I like to play when I'm stressed. I also do theory.

Is this really a problem? I don't practice everyday (thank goodness!) but that hasn't stopped me doing well in music. Do you really need to practice every day? I think that to do that would at times be too much especially if you don't want music as a career. I sometimes find that I improve wonderfully by not actually practising at all but by having a rest!
I was actively encouraged by a teacher to take up another wind instrument, because he said that it would allow me to get more work in bands etc. because often here people have to play more than one instrument and by playing more you are more likely to get the job.
Anyway thank you to all the people who have voted.

There is a difference between playing the recorder: meaning 'Three Blind Mice' or Grade 8- for this it is as hard and equally as good as any other instrument.

- violin grade 5
- flute grade 4
- treble and descant recorder, just for fun.
- i can sort of play the xylophone and keyboard.
- i tried the penny whistle and harmonica, but I haven't played them for ages so I've totally forgotten how to play them now!

There are quite a lot of 'What Instrument Do You Play' & 'How Many Instruments Do You Play' polls, but this one was started last year.

Viola, Violin, Piano. C'mon people, how many of you can actually play the instruments you claim - that's not pick out a tune or got grade 1 10 years ago! By equal measure, I could say because I've played surdo drums, agogo bells, snare drum and shaker in Samba Bands and because I've played an electric organ before and because I can get a note out of a flute and becuase I can kinda play some of the Bach Cello suites on Cello (learnt them on viola) and because I can play the triangle I play 10 instruments!
