Greetings;

What do you all find to be the best strategy in developing a student's sight-reading skills. For grade 1-5 tests.

My idea on it is to give the student progressively difficult pieces to play on a daily basis. For example, 5 or more tunes per day that they should sight-read.

First they would tap the rhythm, then name the notes then play the notes.

What are your best strategies ? and if you have some sort of sight-reading materials book please let me know.

This has issue has been visited many times but I'll respond anyway. There is no "best strategy" to use, it depends on the student; rate of learning, motivation and most importantly practice. That is where I think the strategy is, if any; how one practices and the frequency is the bottom line. Practice sessions must be goal oriented, consistent and moderate in pace. What one cannot practice slow, one cannot play fast. Anyway visit "jazzbooks.com they have numerous texts on the subject. In the final analysis as one educator said " the best way to sight read is to sight read," do plenty of the stuff.
