Hello, I am releived that i have created this topic properly, I am hoping someone can give me some tiops on how to control laughing outbursts, I had a very embarrassing situation on Monday in that we were talking about AIDs and HIV.

What happened was there was a video on about people in Africa who have been affectyed by AIDS. There was an old woman on who was saying that her daughter, and son in Law had died of AIDS, and she had been left to look after the orphaned child, who was also sick with AIDS. Unfortunately, I was in the type of mood where I'll laugh at anything, and the woman said 'I've lost a daughter, and a Son-In-Law to AIDS, and they left with a sick child.' And I started laughing uncontrollably, you can imagine what happened.

I am hoping someone can give me some tips on how to control laughing outbursts, and that this will never happen again. smile.gif

Oops, that was supposed to be the first post.

I would probably try that If I had access to your jokes and anecdotes, I am sorry I am speaking so formally, but if I wrote these posts informally it would be complete nonsense. laugh.gif

Um.....Bite your tongue. That night work, but you might get ulcers after a while wink.gif. Or just shove your hand over your mouth.

Mushroom, I'm sorry. I made light of what actually was an awkward issue for you.

Putting my serious head on now, I suspect that, like one of my best mates at school, you make a laughing sound as a nervous reaction to something that concerns, or worries or moves you.

She found it really tough when we were school age, but it has got easier as she got older - she isn't as nervous in difficult situations as she was when a teenager, and she figured out a trick to convert the would-be laugh into a sigh (I can't remember how, I'll have to ask her.)

She also talked to our head of year about it, so that the HOY told other teachers and she didn't get hassle for doing it any more. This may help you if you find that, like her, the more you laugh the worse the teachers become and the more you feel nervous and need to laugh.

Hello Mushroom, welcome to this site. I am also fairly new. I have seen a few of your posts in the games place, it seems to be where you live, me also!

Anyway, about your question. This seems like a common problem to me. I think most people will find this an issue at some point in their life. People seem to have hit the nail on the head when they say it is a nervous reaction. Maybe try thinking of something that upsets you, or just isn't funny whenever you feel a laughing fit coming on. Though make sure it isn't too upsetting, you don't want to depress yourself...

If this doesn't work, try not to worry. Hopefully it will be just a passing phase, and maybe the moreyou worry, the more of a problem it may become. Chill out and relax. Hope you solve the problem

By the way... they do say laughter is the best medicine!

Hi Welcome to forums! biggrin.gif

I understand your situation, it must have been really awkward! sad.gif
I get this sometimes, especially when I'm feeling randomly hyper and just grin when I'm walking down the street or on the bus...you can imagine the weird looks I get...
I also laugh randomly when meeting new people or when there is a big awkward silence in conversation; I think this is probably due to nerves too.

What I do usually is think of sad things that have happened to me, or just a sad event that could happen sad.gif and that usually sobers me up quite quickly.

Think of something dreadfully sad - like the death of a loved one. Sorry to sound morbid, but it does work...
Mushroom
That might just work with the smaller ones, unfortunately, If I was in a huge laughing mood, and someone told me my whole family was dead, and proved it, I'd probably start laughing my head off.

Tankfully, these don't happen too often, once a year at most and the big ones have never happened when i was anywhere like school, or formal places, so thankyou for all your tips, and Katyjay, It's Okay, it's not really the end of the world, just seriously annoying and embarrasing sometimes, so it doesn't matter that you 'threw light' on it.

I'll try your tips.

This used to happen to me constantly. I would laugh at anything no matter how serious. I think that the moment I stopped was when I had some real tragedy in my life. Whenever I'm tempted to laugh I can control myself now by thinking of that and biting myself as well.
Hmm, sorry, that was quite a random post.

Just like to say I have the same problem. But I don't always find it embarrsing. I don't really know how to stop it really, I should learn.
Mushroom
well not really Embarrasing, but that's the closest way I can describe it in words, but It still can be quite annoying, butr it's getting better. smile.gif
sphiff
Yes, biting works but it hurts alot too. Sometimes I try to think of the funny thing and tell myself that its not funny at all and that there's no reason to laugh... otherwise I just don't look at anyone else who is laughing too, cause that would make me laugh even more. Or I shut my ears to their giggles.
Amber
When you feel a fit of the giggles coming on concentrate on your breathing. Breathe deeply into your diaphragm, and then breathe out very slowly and count at the same time. Make the outbreaths last twice as long as the in breaths, i.e. count in for 5 and out for 10. This is a grounding technique which hopefully will calm you.

If the worst comes to the worst try and turn the laughter into a fit of coughing.

Hope this helps
