Greetings;
Can I use the Steel String Guitar instead of the Nylon Stringed Guitar for All the Guitar Exams?
Additionally, I was told that I could use the basic western cowboy way of holding the guitar for the guitar exams instead of the classical way right?

I'm pretty sure I have read that this is OK...
I'm not a guitarist though!

I have a guitar-playing son taking an exam this autumn, and I can't see how a candidate would be able to demonstrate all the necessary techniques on a steel-stringed guitar. The syllabus and technical requirements really are geared to nylon-strung guitars...it's just not the same instrument as a steel-stringed guitar.
however, I'm only the guitarist's mother, not the guitarist, so I suggest you post your question on the Strings forum for some more useful replies.

The regs state that the syllabus is for nylon string guitars only. How you hold the guitar would not be an issue.

You are marked on posture with the guitar.

I thought you couldn't use steel strings on a classical guitar, coz there isnt a truss (?) rod in the neck of it, so the tension would just make it snap?

The variety of strings and the posture used are both for a reason. If you are not using these things one wonders why you are doing a classical guitar exam? Then, assuming the exam has been and gone, what was the outcome?
