I've noticed over the last couple of days that any discussion about music seems to have been completely abandoned, with a giant wave of sarcasm engulfing everything- so why don't we get back (or bach) to discussing music again ?

Now that summer is finally upon us is anybody planning to go to any concerts or festivals- classical or otherwise ?
Of course it would have been Glastonbury last weekend but it was cancelled for this year.
I'm going to be going to Womad for a day at the end of next month. I went last year and found it to be an excellent mix of world music.

Good idea Ian.

I'm singing in a concert on Saturday (Mozart Requiem in Dorking - would be lovely to see you all there!), then a fortnight to build up strength for the Proms.

I received a bumper envelope of Prom tickets not long ago. Sadly, didn't get a couple I was after (Brahm's piano concerto - shame!), but still have eight to go to I think.

Having spent yesterday writing a long and detailed answer to a query about articulation in Bach's E major flute sonata, I would debate the assertion that 'any discussion of music seems to have been completely abandoned'. mad.gif

However, if you would like to discuss concerts, then I'll mention that I'm playing in my first London Recorder Orchestra concert on Saturday 8th July in Pimlico. We're playing arrangements of Butterworth, Moskowski (by our very own willobie smile.gif ), Ireland and Holst, plus original works for recorder orchestra by Steve Marshall and Andrew Melville (world premiere).

The orchestra contains several Forums members: jo.clarinet, willobie and me. smile.gif Pm me if anyone would like details, we'd love to see you there.

That;s quite a list Jonscott14!

I was asked to sing in a concert on Saturday - but I have a long-standing entry in the diary for a friend's birthday party so unfortunately won't be able to.

Will be singing Faure requiem on Sunday.

I have my leaving concert on Monday, and will hopefully have 3 recordings to post up from it smile.gif And 2 orchestra course concerts this summer, playing all sorts of pretty difficult works (Stravinsky's Firebird, Dvorak 8+9, Wagner (ick) overture, Britten's 4 sea pieces and something else...). Very exciting.

I saw a most amazing concert last weekend - a young violinist called Sergey Khachatryan playing Shosti 1 with the Philharmonia. Honestly, this guy sounds as good as anyone - Perlman, Vengerov, anyone. He's amazing! I you get a chance to see him, go for it, please!! They also played Mahler 1 that night (one of my faves). And I was in the very front row, about 1m from the first violins biggrin.gif

Going to the Proms on the 25th August to see Mendelssohn Violin Concerto + Sibelius 5 smile.gif
katyjay
Bit quiet at the moment.

Of course, there's Stalybrige coming up, and Woodford after that. BE THERE OR BE A PARALLELOGRAM biggrin.gif

And the SRP playing day at Clapham on Saturday.
And my Opera Summer School performances.

But I've been focusing on exams in other instruments rather than much singing, so I need to get back into shape sad.gif

2 July (Sunday) : Young Virtuoso Recital by Lee Pei Ming's during Singapore International Piano Festival 2006
7 July (Friday) : President's Young Performers Concert

I'm really looking forward to these two concerts!

It's quite a busy time for me at the moment:

South London Playing Day on Saturday (recorders) which lots of us are going to, I think - me, andante, Katyjay, willobie, suepea, noisybassoon and barry-clari, if I remember rightly. smile.gif

On Sunday a group of us are playing recorder consorts at a church in Ilford (we had actually been planning to rehearse on that day for a concert the next Sunday, but were persuaded to come and do our rehearsing at the church's Flower Festival, as background music!)

Then Saturday 8th - Recorder Orchestra rehearsal and Concert (and there's still one horribly exposed sopranino bit I'm playing which I can't do properly, though I've been practising it a lot - yikes ohmy.gif )

Sunday 9th - consort playing in a Tudor Hunting Lodge for some sort of Open Day. It's a nice place to play recorders in, because it makes you feel very authentic!

Saturday 15th-Friday 21st - Clarinet Summer School, yay! smile.gif

I was just referring to the General Music Forum where there seemed to have been a lot of posts along the lines of "what is your favourite triangle etc"- sorry to have made you angry.

Ahh, but at least its quite spread out, untill all the other bands concerts are put into the equation! - then life does get a bit hectic!
Wiltshire youth Jazz orchestra will be playing at the Marlborough Jazz Festival on saturdy the 8th of july, alongside many top acts from around the country - the event hosts nearly 100 groups over 3 days, many are free although a stroller ticket allows people entry to as many venues as possible, we will be playing outside again this year - in the same place as last year - we were on a road opposite a restraunt, and a fire engine came along - in the middle of a sax solo - t'was brilliant, the whole sax line moved back to let the fire engine through, whilst continuing to play the piece, and even the soloist kept going!

I may come along to that- is there a website anywhere with the details on?

I live in Didcot and frequently visit avebury so I know Marlborough quite well.

Yesterday was the Orchestra concert for me- my cello kept slipping in the quintet.
Tuesday was the Band concert- I had an odd pair of timpani and one is seriously broken- oh no...
Friday is a concert that I am going to (not performing for a change) with Humphrey Lyttleton and Stacey Kent- should be good.
Then music exam accompanying for the next 2 weeks- with extra rehearsals for worried parents- joy...

It's ok, ianfiat, I was just reacting to the 'no-one talks about music on here anymore' posts that several people have made - some of us do, regularly (alongside non-musical posts as well). Your comment was of the 'last straw' variety - I'm sorry my vitriol was directed at you. sad.gif

no worries smile.gif
barry-clari
Fairly quiet on the concert front at the moment (I'm thinking playing as opposed to watching).

There's the SRP playing day Jo's mentioned, a run of school concerts that I'll be playing in through to mid July, then it's all quiet until some outdoor wind band concerts through August, then unless anything else crops up that I don't know about yet, it's Woodford Green! biggrin.gif
willobie
Looking forward to seeing people at the South London SRP Playing day on Saturday. smile.gif
Next Saturday (8th July) I will be playing (and conducting) in the London Recorder Orchestra concert in Pimlico - hope I've managed to find the music by then... smile.gif
On the 15th Gemmy, Gambo & I will be heading off to the ELLSO Summer School in Wakefield for a week - hope I can get out of the school concert which falls smack in the middle of it. mad.gif
On 29th I will be back to Wakefield for a week at the Recorder Summer School. smile.gif
In the meantime, I still have a house full of boxes to unpack... sad.gif
