Well done Lizzie and pupils!
I have often thought this:
QUOTE
I think teachers who boast about the majority of their students getting distinctions may be entering them for the wrong grade!
as the exams are there as a signpost of the level you've reached, not one to "reach up" for or to "look back" at! I might consider entering a very nervous adult for an exam which might be, say half a grade too easy for them, but having said this the ones who've done exams with me so far have entered at the correct level and done well!
I've said before, the proudest moment of my career was when a very dyslexic girl passed grade 1 clarinet after 3 years of learning and a big struggle with learning scales. I'm so proud of her, and indeed of them all! I think age is irrelevant, so I won't be putting ages or exact marks (I don't want any of them to log on and identify themselves!) but I started the thread so that anyone who wants to, can share their successes.
Yesterday went quite well I think, nobody was really outstanding but nobody messed up either, so fingers crossed.
Oh there was one girl who hadn't put in anywhere near enough work - I gave up wasting time worrying about her weeks ago! The rest were good though.

Thanks Ann and Elliewelly for your helpful comments. It is so true that success is relative to the situation. I think I feel proudest of my grade 4 candidate who was only 11 but put in so much work and really deserved his pass. No wonder you were proud of your grade 1 candidate struggling with dyslexia, Elliewelly. Hope your results are good.

Exams 19th June. Results came yesterday, 13th July, so over 3 weeks. Bit last minute for comfort - we were having a school concert last night & giving out the certificates would be special for them in front of parents etc.
Got the results on-line, but the post came in time, so they got their certificates at the concert after all.
2x Grade 2 Piano (1 merit)

Just arrived back from the exam centre. I entered:
2 x grade 1 clarinet
1 x grade 1 trumpet
3 x grade 1 cornet
All of the children came out of the exam room smiling and they'd definitely put in the practice so I'm hoping for some good results.
Well the results are through and are:
1 x cornet - distinction
2 x cornet - merit
2 x clarinet - merit
1 x trumpet - pass.
The children are over the moon and so am I!

I had a student taking Grade 1 piano. She has been so worried about her results despite me constantly telling her she would be fine! Shes taken to it like a duck to water!
Anyway she got 134/150 distinction, so i was very proud of her and took great delight in popping round to her house to give her the results and seeing the huge smile on her face!
Just waiting for the theory to come now!

Told a couple of hours ago that I have got a Merit with 123 marks - including 18/18 for Aural, although the scales let me down, only 16 for that when I knew them all really well.
Anyway, no danger of having to perform in the High Scorers' concert with only a Merit!

I only had 1 entered this time but I was really unsure if she would pass (g2 violin) as as the exam date drew nearer she totally lost her confidence and started going downhill. However she did pass, only with a pass but hey I am so pleased for her!

I still haven't got my result for my grade 8 violin from the 26th june as well.
But I ended up by coincidence having the same examiner for my piano exam which I did on monday......and he played the same piece in the aural. So that might explain why it's being so slow if he's only just finished his tour.

I've got the result for one boy who took his exam on the 5th July (both online and in the post), but nothing yet for the ones who took it on the 3rd July.
Strange how it goes.
I really hoped I would get them before they finished with me for the summer, which most of them have now

Sympathies for those who are still waiting from June

I got the results today after 3 weeks and am so excited!
Grade 1 clarinet - pass
Grade 1 saxophone - pass (very nearly a merit, and the little boy is dyslexic - he's thrilled!)
Grade 3 clarinets - 1 merit, 1 pass (very nearly a merit again!)
Grade 3 saxophone - distinction (140!)
Grade 4 clarinet - pass
Grade 5 piano - fail (not a big surprise)
and my Grade 8 saxophone - also distinction!

I am VERY surprised because I made mistakes in my aural and study, had one 'blob' in my Bach, and one re-start in my scales. I was obviously being a bit negative about how badly I'd done though.
My prep test piano boy did really well too.

Does anyone else, like me, feel more than a little hesitant about posting their pupils' results on a public noticeboard without their agreement???
(I got a good smattering of passes, merits and distinctions, from all three main boards, the largest number getting good merits - no fails - but wouldn't dream of being more specific!)
elliewelly
Aug 2 2006, 10:16 AM
Mine don't mind - I asked them. I wouldn't specify marks, apart from the one who did so well!

As long as it's fairly general and not as specific as 'John got 130 in grade 1 piano, Andy got 125 in grade 5, etc I suppose it's ok. My ABRSM results were as expected but my two weakest candidates got merit and distinction in Trinity and LCM - I almost fainted in shock! They were shocked too - one of them thought she'd failed and I thought she'd fail too.
[/quote]
I find, like Steve Hopwood (I don't know how to put up old threads for easy access), that Trinity are more concerned with musicianship and interpretation, whereas AB are more concerned with precision in notes and timing.
One of my LCM results was disappointing this time (a bare pass) - in contrast to last time, when they were higher than expected. I usually get pretty much what I expect from the other two.

Thank you! The children are really happy too, apart from the obvious. I too had a pupil I wasn't hopeful about, and she was fully expecting to fail - but she passed! I'm still on cloud nine about my own result - I did make a few mistakes and I have a 9-month-old baby so practice opportunities had to be grabbed here and there. I think this is my happiest ever result personally.

Aug 2 2006, 02:41 PM
I think we all like to be proud of our results, but they don't exactly match with the effort we put in. For instance, someone with natural ability and musicianship, that perhaps plays another instrument, is more likely to get a better mark than someone who is struggling to get to grips with the theory side at the same time, and is a first timer at the aurals, etc.
Some of my most satisfying results have been bare passes, which, for the candidate concerned with their particular set of circumstances is THEIR distinction. Without bring rude, you cannot make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
One of my singing students was proudly telling me that her partner, a guitar teacher, had never had anything LESS that a distinction from his students. That may be, but I would be suspicious i) that he was telling the truth, or ii) that he was entering them for too low a grade, either deliberately or due to lack of experience.
A healthy spread of passes, merits and distinctions means we as teachers have got it about right.
Whatever results we care to post publicly, others will form a view of us as teachers, and that is very misleading.
elliewelly
Aug 2 2006, 02:58 PM
Well said, Ann. My proudest achievements have included bare passes, especially by a girl with special educational needs. Some of my students who did well play other instruments and are experienced exam-takers, but others were first timers.
I agree with this:
"One of my singing students was proudly telling me that her partner, a guitar teacher, had never had anything LESS that a distinction from his students. That may be, but I would be suspicious i) that he was telling the truth, or ii) that he was entering them for too low a grade, either deliberately or due to lack of experience."
I used to over-estimate how good my students had to be to pass, resulting in a lot of high marks early on. I've relaxed into it now though. Except with my own exams - I thought I'd done really badly.
