I was reading through the Phil Woods Sax sonata which one of my friends (who has now left school sad.gif ) did for his DipABRSM, and one of the techniques incorporated into the music was "slap tongue"

What on EARTH is it??!

Haha I'll send you a sample recording if you like!!

Tongue 't' keeping your teeth close together so it's fairly loud.

When you were little did you ever make "clip-clop" horse sounds using your tongue against the roof of your mouth? The "clop" syllable is a bit like slap tongueing. You create a vacuum with the reed against the mouthpiece and releasing it creates the sound rather than blowing through the instrument. It's easier with the bigger saxophones so bari is easier than tenor is easier than alto etc. It's something I can occasionally get right on tenor but not with enough consistency to ever risk trying to use it in performance. I've heard it performed on several occasions by people with a lot more skill than me.

Sounds mega cool when played en mass in the bass clarinet section!

That sounds pretty complicated! My technique only stretches to the recorder and possibly flute! tongue.gif
