Has anyone got any suggestions of books which include suitable traditional songs which have to be sung unnaccompanied in the singing exams? What sort of standard should the songs be, or doesn't it really matter?

I haven't exactly got first hand experience of this, but there was a thread a while back, and people seemed to think that the precise standard was not a big issue.
Things like Waly waly and Scarborough Fair were mentioned. You might like to try a search.

I just coached my son for Grade 5 Singing and we used a piece from the Oxford Book of Folk Songs called The Mermaid. There is a time stipulation for this part of the exam, you'll have to check it! I don't think the song needs to be particularly complicated - this one isn't - but I felt it needs lots of character and of course impeccable tuning.

We were thrilled that the result was 130 including 21/21 for sight singing!

There are some beautiful Gaelic (Scots) traditional songs in print, if anyone is interested in this style I can recommend a couple of songs/books.

Hi Emma,
Are you a sop. or an alto? Would you prefer to sing unaccompanied ?
Sorry I can't remember requirements of Grade 7 and don't have the syllabus to hand.

Soprano, and we have to do it unaccompanied, which I don't mind at all. Might be quite fun to modulate in the middle somewhere too!!

I did Ye Banks and Braes for my Grade 6, and really enjoyed doing soemthing a bit different. Would even try Gaelic if I had some idea of the translation and pronunciation!

Thanks. smile.gif
