Has anyone seen this? What do you think? I only heard about it the other day, came across videos of some of the acts on the internet. It seems to be a bit like X- factor or American Idol or something but people can do other stuff besides sing, and its not restricted to people over 16. I dont think I can watch it from where I am, but will be keeping track of whats going on. Did anyone else hear that amazing 11 year old singer that was on it last week or so I think? Video here....

That girl can sing! ohmy.gif
singer15
yes she can sing but i do think that she would be better off sinigng something nice and simple without the big impersonation of something big like that.......she has a whitney type voice which OK I would agree is an amazing talent to have but I would much rather listen to an eva cassidy style performance simple pure sweet voice than something like that

just my oppinion!!!
Louigi
OMG!!!! She's only eleven. That's insane.
Cyrilla
Yuk. I'm afraid I thought it was horrible.

sad.gif
Amber
She was awesome, in a slightly scary way, but I do fear for the long term safety of her voice. Also what will happen to her once the music industry get their hands on her. Call me old-fashioned but I think kids should be able to enjoy their time as kids - I fear she will be forced to grow up all too soon. And it's happening already - look at the choice of song. Personally I would have preferred her to sing Over The Rainbow or something of that ilk.

That girl can YELL. There was nothing musical or tuneful in that performance and the choice of song was wrong for an 11 year old. Like Amber, I would be concerned for her voice in the long term - if she keeps going like that, she won't have a voice by the time she's 16.

It was... scary. Yes, she has a big voice. But I can't say I enjoyed it much. And I agree with the others, one wonders what will happen to her voice if she's encouraged to keep singing that way.

Then hand me an old-fashioned hat and call me Gladys! smile.gif I agree absolutely, kids spend the first 18 years of teir life trying to look older and the rest of their life trying to look younger. I am a firm believer that the shorter the childhood and growing up period, the less-balanced the individual (a generalisation I know, but it seems to hold true a lot of the time).
sarah-flute
Can I jump on the old-fashined bandwagon? I always think it's so refreshing to meet children who have been allowed to be children: I know I have been appalled occasionally to see children wandering around my town who, from their make-up, clothing and attitude have appeared to be in their late teens or even early twenties, only to take a closer look and realise that under all the make-up is a 12 or 13 year old who has grown up too quickly. I remember being horrified when I saw a girl who can only have been about 11 wearing jeans with something highly suggestive (I forget exactly what) embroidered across her backside. A paedolphile's wet dream you'd think, I cannot imagine what her parents were thinking huh.gif sad.gif If I should be lucky enough to have a daughter one day, she'll wear clothes like that over my dead body at that age.

She sings like a full grown woman....!

I agree that there are much better ways to sing though.

She shouts like a full grown undervelopped pop singer - there's no control and no technique (her larynx was practically jumping out of her head when she was screeching her high notes - of course this is how most pop 'divas' insist on trying to sing, so in that respect, she's got it just right.) Her voice won't last without training and at 11 she shouldn't be singing any songs that are outside of her emotional range - how can she sing about break-ups if she's never been in a relationship? Not to mention the overt sexual overtones in a lot of pop-music - it's plain wrong for children to be singing about that kind of thing because it should be (please god) outside of their realm of understanding.

Furthermore, I'm in the old timers camp too - I believe children are encouraged to grow up to quickly (especially by wretched American style reality television nonsense). Even the (rather fabulous) website 'violinmasterclass' has some children that are way too young playing amazing violin works - part of me feels 'well done children' and wants to celebrate their talent, whereas another part of me screams 'put the violin down and go and play outside, rip your new clothes, get dirty knees, steal apples and get told off for it'.

Sarah, Boo - if we're all adopting old-lady names, I think I'll have one too.

Renie.

I SO agree with the old-lady rants about this girl, her voice and the too-quick growing up of today's children...

Super, let's form an old-ladies traditionalist values club - so far we have Doris, Gertrude, Gladys and Renie... any other takers?

I'll be Peggy. I've got a girl in my choir who's a bit like that, but I'm fighting a losing battle with her because she's had 'singing lessons' from a lady at church who used to be an opera singer. sad.gif

Just altered my sig too. I'm now expecting a lot of pms addressing me as 'Peggy'! And yes, I'm very good at knitting shapeless garments and moaning about the state of my ankles. smile.gif

Maud here agrees too. That noise is not a good idea for the young lady's future vocal health.

Maud! Inspired, however, Katyjay, you've shot yourself in the foot here. If you're going to be an old lady AND a singer (especially in church) you're going to have to develop a vibrato of about a tone and a half and learn to sing just enough out of time to upset the inner ear of any musicians nearby. You've been warned!

Pass ''em round, I'll have em with tea you can stand the spoon up in (full of sugar and, naturally, drunk out of the saucer). I'm confused - are you Mable or are you Gladys...? Maybe one twin is evil?

Not quite sure what that is all about, but seeing as you've named most of my elderly/ancient/late Aunts and cousins, you may as well have the rest as extra names to "christen" new members of (what is it?) OLTVA?????

You and CE are showing your age by thinking that Deirdre and Judith are 'old ladies'' names...they belong to MY contemporaries dry.gif ph34r.gif blink.gif

Diapason, you just have to read the whole thread to know why rosfrog decided to set up OLTVA!

Noodle, I haven't seen which name you've chosen...

And Mum says, you can use her name as well

Molly biggrin.gif

Edit.......Just read the thread and I, too am an old fashioned geezer. Today, for example, my first piano pupil is all of 12 years old (girl) and arrives wearing jeans which look as though someone forgot to sew on the top bit.
I spent the next hour DESPERATELY trying to avoid a vision of what I will now call Pianists ######......or the Great Divide......sorry to be crude, but you get the picture.

For heavens sake..........she's twelve, looking like she's on her way to a pin-up calender modelling session.

I will add as far as I'M concerned.........She's QUITE safe !!!!!!! mad.gif

Great Aunt Dilys
Cyrilla
Are you joining, diapason? Hmmm - again, I'm not sure about Molly - I know quite a few of those who are under 16...

diapason
Sppoky story about "Agnes" (yes, it's very old!!)

Way back in 1970, some BBC friends were involved in Am. Dram. I used to go along to rehearsals and make tea etc. One day, the actress playing "Agnes" failed to turn up, so they askd if I would read through the part. After that the name stuck, and amongst certain friends (ex Beeb) still does.

One of these dear friends who always called me Agnes (with great mirth) died in 2005. It was two weeks after his funeral in Croydon that we held a dinner party here in Poulton. Over coffee, I mentioned I had been to the funeral of a friend who I knew from the BBC back in the '70's.......nothing more said. None of our dinner guests were remotely connected with the aforementioned crowd from the BBC. One of them is a Spiritualist, and after a few minutes, he lent across to me and gently asked "Why did he call you ANGUS?"

Agnes - Angus ----spookily close, eh?

Just a little ghost story to close the evening
