I am a piano/violin/theary teacher (7 years) and also accompany ABRSM practical exams.

I am having a little difficulty in teaching the chords/key changes section in the aural for grades 6-8. While I can recognise the chords and key changes (blessed(?) with perfect pitch), I am completely baffled when trying to explain them to my pupils.

Does anyone have any tips on how to approach this or any suggestions of books I can read?

Thanks,
Amy

I get my pupils to listen to the bass note and to listen to whether the chord is major, minor, augmented and diminished. For example, in a major key, the supertonic could never be a major chord. So as a process of elimination, if you heard a major chord, it couldn't be the supertonic. For your piano pupils this might come easier than your violin ones maybe.

I do lots and lots of examples over many weeks.
