ALL,

Would one have to pay the full amount if one is retaking a section of a Diploma?

Doubtful. Didn't you get sent the details when your mark sheet came through for the dip?

Who said it's my mark sheet? I'm seeking on behalf of me best mate...

Indeedly-doddly. How silly of me. You're best of asking him then why he didn't receive this with _his_ mark sheet. Given you are in the colonies it might be best if he hooked up with the local ABRSM rep to sort this out. The costs in the UK are of course different to the outer reaches of The Commonwealth so any advice you receive here on behalf of your friend may not be applicable in your friend's geographically-diverse case.

If all else fails, you should contact the very excellent Diploma Office at ABRSM HQ. Say hello from me.

My dear,

There are several ABRSM candidates "in the colonies" although Barbados has been Independent since 30 November 1966. My best mate is not Tech-savvy and I've posted on his behalf...

The outer reaches of the Commonwealth are of no interest to me as far as my query goes.

Mate, you should be deferring to your head of state every morning at breakfast:

As for your mate's troubles, tell him I'll pay for his retake...

With love

Going back to the original topic tongue.gif , does anyone know the answer to that question for sure? I am hopefully going to take my DipABRSM in December, but I'm not entirely confident that I'll be completely ready, and so as I don't have much money, if I would have to pay the full amount for any resits, I will wait until Summer 2007. However, if I would only have to pay a fraction of the exam fee as it may only be one section, I might as well go for it in December. Anyone know the answer?

If you resit the whole exam, you pay to resit the whole exam - remember that the AB still has to provide the venue and examiners regardless of whether it's your first exam or a resit!
I believe that if you are not taking the whole thing it would be charged differently.

I believe there's a case for some kind of ABRSM Loyalty Card. The more exams (and resits) you take, the more points you earn which can be traded in for a whole range of goods and services.

They should structure it such that if you sit grades 1-8, theory1-8, Dip and LRSM you should get the FRSM free.

Probably the most cogent and sensible reply so far. Thank you Fen.

The HLR told my best mate that resits for a section(s) of Dip Exams do not attract the full fee, rather just a fraction of it.

Lucidly,

On a serious note though, it is worth bearing in mind that the total cost of retaking each section may well exceed the overall total for the exam as a whole. This is certainly the case with RCO exams for example.

As an illustration, if the diploma costs USD X in total, the Quick Study retake (which is 15% of the marks) probably costs 33% of X because of the bugg3ration factor of having to come out for an exam lasting about 10 minutes....

Mr Bouffant's loyalty card is such a good idea.

Do any of the other boards offer such a system?

Perhaps some of the minor boards do... There seem to plenty around which offer a dip for little effort and cost...

Is this the Tesco one mrb?? You would certainly be able to trade the Tesco card vouchers I think.

Yes - sad fact, these days. I suspect that even the DipAbrsm is no longer the standard it once was. There seems to be mass dumbing-down everywhere...

Hmmm... even on the forums these days I fear unsure.gif

Biscuit anyone, or a small triangular shaped sandwich with your tea maybe? rolleyes.gif

Not sure what you mean about "on the forums", Janexxx. There has been some excellent food for thought on the Brian Davey thread, and the over-rated composers thread. If people are serious about their music, they need serious places in which to discuss their passion.

True...I particularly liked reading your views on Shostakovich. tongue.gif

Looking forward to reading some more of your posts in due course.

Ah but I seem to remember you disagreed with my views on Shostakovich's mindless, empty, over-rated music. Interesting that you should bring up the topic again. As this is rather off-topic and may annoy others, might I suggest that you PM me so we can discuss this further?

No, I didn't disagree I just ignored it and spoke about my heartfelt feelings for Mr John Williams. Yes its off topic so lets not dioscuss it further here.

BTW what do you think of Mr Williams' guitar playing, is he better than Julian Bream? You can PM me if you like

I like both JB and JW. Had the privilege of hearing JW play Paul Hart's Concerto for Guitar and Jazz Orchestra at a Prom in '88 and JB play Sir Malcolm Arnold's Guitar Concerto at a televised prom in '91. Both splendid occasions and the gents themselves were consummate musicians.

I met JB afterwards and asked him what he thought of JW....

He said he thought the theme to "Superman" was too derivative of "Star Wars". Apparently he enjoyed the score to "ET" though wink.gif
