I have already booked for a couple of the preliminary stages as I work in Leeds two days a week and stay over Tuesday nights.
Others may like to know that full details are on the website www.leedspiano.com
Tickets for all stages are available, but the Hall used at Leeds Uni for the frist stages is not too large so supplies are limited unless you get in quick.

I wonder how much would any pianist of those participating in the Leeds competition score on a grade 8 ABRSM exam. I think if someone got a merit, it would be a mighty shock.

Yes I do not know if there was a minimum standard for entry. The full syllabus of what has to played at each stage is given on the website.

Last time (2003) I went to one Stage 2 session ,and one semifinal.

I have to say that the Stage 2 performers we fairly competent but not outstanding, and probably not better than a Dip A or Performers Certificate level. There was one poor performance of Beethovens Op 2 No 3 Sonata. She started far too fast then couldnt cope!
By the semi final , the really good ones have been sorted out, and I was able to hear the Russian girl who reached the final (was her name Elena Rubinova?). Earlier this year she came back to Leeds and did a recital at the 'Venue' at Leeds College of Music. She was excellent.

I havent heard much of the last winner Antti Siralla though.

I had a look at the pieces, the easiest one's about the level of DipABRSM....and the hardest pieces (concertos) are over FRSM level....how on earth can people play those?? huh.gif
