Does the new 'Windows Live Messenger' do anything that I lowly Year Nine/ten student would find useful, bearing in mind I have no mobile phone etc.?

You can "Appear Offline" but still talk to just the people you want to talk to.
You can send messages to someone even if they're offline.
That's all I've figured out

From what I've seen now, it looks absolutely worthless. I probably won't download it.

It is - it's lost all my contacts too

EDIT: I stand corrected, they are back.

I haven't lost my contacts! It's not much different to MSN Messenger 7.0. New layouts really. I suppose it does look nicer...

I much prefer it Mathwell. However, you really need a phone!

Well... not only does it have the advantages said above, but like Skype you can call phones for minimal charges. It's 0.014p per minute (including tax) to call any phone in western europe!!!!
You also can't download MSN Messenger anymore... I tried it because my Windows Live was playing up... but Windows Live is now the IM of the present.
(yes really, it is 0.014p per minute!!!) *shocked*
