Apologies if this thread has been done before.

If not, I'd like to nominate Andrey Rubtsov

I would recommend the piano music of Federico Mompou (1897-1983), Catalan composer.
I specially like his 'Cancion y Danzas , a series (12 in all) of pieces combining a song (Cancion) and a dance (Danzas). They are very playable. All this piano music is available on two Naxos CD's

Thanks for the reminder of Mompou. name rings a bell - I think I jotted his name down sometime after hearing one of his pieces on radio 3

Would also add some of his Preludes, 'Fetes Lointains' and 'Musica Callada'

Andrey Rubtsov is brilliant, I love his Romantic Sonata for piano.

If you like light-hearted, sometimes comical pieces, check out Philip R Buttall - as well as his own original compositions, he adds a twist to some famous classical works, often in piano duet form. For example, the primo player plays Mozart's Rondo Alla Turca, whilst the secondo player adds a samba accompaniment! He also arranges these piano duets for various different ensembles. Here's his page: www.prbmusic.co.uk

I particularly recommend The Lone Arranger (any arrangement, there are many to choose from).

I love the music of Louis Moreau Gottschalk - especially when played on fortepiano!

Hmmm, the wonderful ambiguity of the conjunction "and". Did you mean either new or unknown, or rather unknown composers who are contemporary...?
