I started playing bassoon two months ago and i play in a local band. Also, I play most of the grade 3 scales.
But, i have not seen any female bassoonists, other than me.
At the new year, i saw an orchestra with two bassoonists- both male. My bassoon teacher is male. I know someone who plays basson and they are male.
All my mates take the mick because they say it is an 'Old Man's instrument'.
So, any other female bassoonists?

No, but I'd love to be. I can't afford a bassoon at the moment, so I have to settle for my oboe...
I remember while at uni I was singing in Verdi's Requiem and sat behind this gorgeous young bassoonist, and fell in love with the instrument too. So it's not just for old men!
Maybe I'll get a bassoon one day!

I'd also love to play the bassoon - I may try out a 3 month hire from my local music shop and see how far I can get in that time. I would like to make certain that I enjoy playing the instrument before I consider buying one.

There are more out there, I did a concert a couple of years ago where we 'borrowed' a basoonist because we were low on bass instruments, and she was both young and female!
I would like to play oboe or basoon myself. It's kinda funny actually, as I tend to play oboe parts a lot on flute in my little orchestra, and for some reason they are always A) terribly hard (when put 8ve to make them sound better on flute) and

non stop. While flute parts 1+2 get loads of rest sections I'm still ploughing away getting dizzier and dizzier!
Is this a feature of oboe parts or simply that we have oboe heavy arrangements?!

Hi Ceri,
Be encouraged. Not all bassoonists are male.
My daughter started playing the bassoon at the age of 13, having previously taken up the violin and then piano. It turned out to be her best instrument, secured her a place at the Purcell School and she has now gone on to university.
She would say that she is not an exceptionally good bassoonist, but it has led to some super opportunities and taken her to places that she would not otherwise have visited.
And if music can do that for you, it can't be bad.
So go and enjoy it and I hope it brings you lots of memorable opportunities too.
Regards
Geoff

I'm at an all-girls school and last year we had a bassoon quintet play at the school concert. They were a Year 13 (now at Cardiff Uni studying music), a Year 11, two Year 10s and a Year 8. It was really impressive. So there you go!!
At my music centre I don't recall there ever being a male bassoonist actually - they all seem to be female, bizarrely!!!!

Thats great.
My kids school only offer brass tuition.
I did ask about violin and piano (as we/they all have one ) but said would have to enquire about getting a teacher.
My eledest (7yo) is fascinated with instruments. I'm taking him to see the Brandenburg concertos Thurs so he can see the harpsichord.
