None of the above. Who says we're meant to understand it anyway? To serve G-d is good enough for me, and whatever that leads to will come as it does. It seems like a pretty good aim in life, what with Him having created everything and all that. Only fair.
People try to understand death, and to do that they try to find a meaning to life. But "who are we to understand death, if we cannot understand life"? One cannot come without the other, because when we understand one, the other will surely follow.
I'm not clear exactly what is meant by "understand" when it comes to this kind of thing. As I understand it (eek, language is letting me down here), "understanding" involves applying some facts (whether observed or not) to some larger concept that makes these facts meaningful.
Now, if we're talking about Life, the Big Questions and all that, can we possibly
have one of these larger, meaning-making concepts that could make sense of the facts of our lives in general? I don't think we possibly can. For some people, G-d fills in this blank; for others, celebrating the fact that such questions are unanswerable by our little minds is key.
Whichever way you choose to "understand" it, the very idea of "understanding" is an elusive and problematic concept, as understanding is, as far as I can see, infinitely deferred.
I think, bohemian, we're saying broadly the same thing...?
Perhaps
