Hi All,
In Part C in the Grade 3 exam do candidates have to repeat both of the two rhythms or melodies by clapping/singing them after they have been played by the examiner?
If so, do they have to repeat the whole rhythm/melody (8 bars)? or is it enough to just point out the different part?

Best Regards

Or just describe the difference.

My understanding has always been that you don't have to repeat any of the tests - just say what changed and explain how it changed. I guess you could do that by singing/clapping the relevant change but that requires a good memory that certainly some of my pupils don't have! smile.gif

I think that is the hardest test in the first 3 grades.

I actually practised that one for my grade 1 challenge even though I got a pass mark in aural at grade 8 in the spring and teach other people how to answer it... ph34r.gif

Hi

Thank you very much for your advice so far, would anyone be able to help me one step further please. Does anyone have the book "Aural Training in Practice Book1 Grades 1-3" by Ronald Smith. If so would someone be kind enough to give me an example explanation of any one of the practice tests on pages 45-47. I am a new teacher with regard to ABRSM examinations and would appreciate any help you can offer.
Thank you in Advance

Ok number 1

rhythmic change: 2nd time there were longer (slower) notes in the middle.

melodic: 2nd time the note was lower at the start of the 2nd bar.

Rhythmic change will involve shorter/longer notes or rests.
Identifying dotted rhythms/triplets might be useful too.
Melodic change will be a higher or lower note.
Answers can be more elaborate and include either note names/degrees of scale for melodic change and note lengths for rhythmic.

Putting up a hand when the change is heard shows the examiner that is was noticed at the right time and also helps with memory.
