I'm preparing for ATCL (Piano Teaching). While looking for relevant books around the subject, I came across 2 books by Denes Agay:
Teaching Piano (2 volumes)
The Art of Teaching Piano: The Classic Guide & Reference Book for All Piano Teachers
What is the difference between the two and which one should I buy?
Appreciate ideas and any other books to recommend, thanks a lot

Hi estherclaire
I own Teaching Piano by Denes Agay in 2 volumes. It may be that the other book is a reprint of these (?)
The basic contents are:
Volume 1
Essentials of piano performance - tempo, metronome, rhythm, teaching rhythm, dynamcs, phrasing and articularion, fingering, pedal technique, ornamentation
Theory and basic keyboard skills - Scales, modes, theory, sightreading, memorization, improvisation
Approaches to specific teaching tasks - the very young beginner, the adult beginner, group piano teaching, recitals
Volume 2
Methods and Repertory - including lists of pieces
Survey of styles and idioms
Aspects of pedagogy
Practical considerations
These books were published in 1981
Another interesting book although quite old is Pianoforte diplomas by Geoffrey Tankard.
Hope this helps.

I own 'the art of teaching piano' and the headings are the same as those quoted by Margaret. The publication date is 2004.

To Margaret and Liz, thanks for your helpful replies
I just found a recommended reading list given by the board
hereAt my local library we don't have music resources, therefore the only way for me is buying a selected few. I know all of these titles are GOOD, but if you've read and found any particularly favourite ones which you'd highly recommend, please let me know.
Thanks for your ideas

Hi Estherclaire
I thought you were doing the ABs teaching diploma?
I own "the Art of Teaching Piano" and as Lizzie says, the headings are the same as those quoted by Margaret. I think that this book is probably a reprint of the "teaching Piano" 2 volume book.
Hope this helps

To Yamaha, thanks for the information. I've looked at the syllabus for both AB & TCL. AB requires a quick study while TCL a written paper exam. Both equally demanding! Personally i feel more confident in study and written exam so perhaps I'll take TCL Teaching (hope my teacher is able to provide some support)
Currently I'm reading Teacher's Companion book published by AB. It's very informative, easy to comprehend but not instrument specific. I'm looking for books to buy on Piano teaching. Please let me know those books which you think I can't miss
