Has anyone just done it or is anyone doing it in the Autumn? I am learning the pieces as part of my A Level course so I am Grade 5 standard for uni, but looking at the pieces, they seem VERY daunting!

Hi
I did my grade 5 a month ago. I did the Allegro Molto, the Etude in F and the Evening in the Village. My teacher kept calling it my "performance" rather than an exam and I found that really helped - I actually enjoyed it
I learnt my contraries using advice from someone on here - doing them really really slowly over and over again - and it worked really well.

I did my Grade 5 Piano exam on 15th July. Everything went quite well overall apart from small slips on various notes which I expect. I still find it annoying though but I suppose that's because I'm a perfectionist! I suppose everybody would love to make no mistakes at all! The only thing which let me down was really just the sightreading - four sharps in the key signature! A friend of mine also did Grade 5 Piano (with the same examiner) and she only had one flat! How unfair's that?! Anyway, I'm sure I'll get a least a merit, but maybe I'll be lucky and just reach the '130' mark for a distinction!
The pieces I did were the 'Allegro Molto', 'Lied' and 'Bossa Nova'. My favourite has to be 'Bossa Nova'. I love the chords and all the different dynamics in the piece. It's what I call a really 'fun' piece! Does anyone else really like this piece?
I've just received the new Grade 6 Piano syllabus via 'musicroom.com' so I'm looking foward to starting work on them in my next lesson, however, I won't be able to enter for the exam till next summer due to the dreaded 'Grade 5 Theory' which I'm doing in March. I can't wait to get over that hurdle!
Anyway, good luck to anyone doing Grade 5 in November or March!

I don't think you really need to play it as fast as that for the exam, I certainly didn't. After all if you could play it like Paul Lewis does on the CD you wouldn't be doing your grade 5, you'd probably be doing your diploma. lol
So I wouldn't worry too much about the speed it's probably better to concentrate on keeping it even and flowing nicely.

Good luck to all of you doing Grade 5! I'm a teacher and I love Bossa Nova too.. I keep playing it now and then. I also love the Grade 7 Elegiac Blues.. for anyone who is more advanced but likes this kind of music.
In fact I like most of the Grade 5 pieces as compare to only some of the pieces from other grades. And yes, the allegro molto doesn't really have to be at breakneck speed so long as you can do it evenly and make it flow. I'd recommend you to aim for at least 76 dotted crotchet beats in a minute, but if you can do up to 84 without problems, that's great.

Don't forget my student from last term who played it under speed, and yet still got quite a good mark in the exam!

i need help with Lied!
in the left hand i need to accent the first note of each bar from the bottom of page 1(you know where i mean?!!)
i can't seem to do it without accenting the right hand as well. erm..help!
jkhouse20
Jul 29 2004, 09:39 PM
I had this problem aswell with 'Lied'. The best advice I can give you is to try and really really concentrate on the left hand and what your doing with it (in this case accenting it) and try and forget what your doing with the right hand. If you try and do this you may get a better overall effect.

Yes- I once played an "Allegro" at about 30 crotchet beats per minute under speed in a violin exam (the accompanist started much, much, much too slowly and I COULD NOT get him to start going faster
) and still got 28 for it... I don't think it REALLY matters too much...

Jul 30 2004, 03:18 PM
I would imagine that mark is because you actually stayed with the accompanist even though it was wrong.
Don't the regulations say something that means if the accompanist messes up you will be marked on how well you cope.....

" in cases of difficulty with the accompaniment, the examiner will listen with great attention to the solo line and mark it on its own merits, but inevitably the impact on the overall performance will still be felt"

Jul 30 2004, 08:35 PM
that'll explain where the 2 marks went then... thanks so much accompanist
