Hi guys,

Just wondering if anyone could give me advice on what pieces to play for my grade 6 flute exam:

I don't like the piece I originally chose in list A so could anyone give me some ideas of different pieces?
I have looked at the exam sylabus except I don't know any of the pieces I just want your opinions. Thanks!
I was originally doing Sonata in E by JS Bach but don't like that

The other pieces I am doing are:

List B: Rutter Suite antique prelude
List C: Telemann fantasia no.2 in A minor - grave and allegro

Thanks

I don't know much of the list A music.

I do like the Hummel, though it's not cheap.

I love the JSBach!! ohmy.gif

I have the Baroque Pieces book 4, but to be honest don't like either of them much.

The CPE is OK. The Leclair is very flowery.

The Gluck is supposed to be nice, but I haven't got my hands on a copy yet!

ps: what kind of music do you like of that era, and what don't you like about the JSB? Might make replying easier for those who know the syllabus well smile.gif

I do like them...i think i like the Bach sonata its just weird but it is nice in that way...but neither me or my teacher know how it goes e.g. tempo etc... and we have never heard it before

any body got any idea of the tempo in quavers or in dotted crotchets as it is in 6/8 if i am not mistaken?

Thanks

I don't know a tempo marking offhand, I do know it's a Sicilian boat song, so it doesn't want to be too slow - it has a lilt to it.

I think I might have played that for my Grade 6, but it was erm... probably about 4 maybe 5 years ago now, so I don't remember that well. I know I played something by Bach, that was in 6/8 but they might have changed the syllabus by now.

Either way, if it is the same piece, I know I found it a bit fiddly and a pain to start with, but really liked it in the end, so maybe look at trying something else too, but also persevere with it?

I think it was in the syllabus last time round, so it's probably the same one.

One of my pupils is attempting the Allemanda (Leclair) but this is quite a hefty piece and is so far requiring a LOT of work. Another is doing the Blavet and loves it! I think this is a really nice bit of quality Baroque! And another is having a go at the two Handel movements - again, good contrast, but requires a nimble tongue (last mvt).

As for List B I have one doing the Rutter Prelude and she absolutely loves this piece! It is beautiful! Have 2 doing the Gaubert Madrigal - a classic bit of flute repertoire but needs very musical playing and phrasing.

And List C.....well I forced the Paul Harris Presto upon my pupils. Only 1 really disliked it (well, I think it was more a case of they didnt want to learn the notes!) but to be honest I really dont think it is that hard! And will make a really good contrast to the typical List A and B pieces chosen.

Well, thats my twopenneth! Sorry for the essay!
