Agree with above. However there is obviously a market for what Lang Lang does, whether or not he does it intentionally, and it may be that he attracts some to his concerts who would not otherwise go. Personally I'd rather go see Alfred Brendel or Angela Hewitt, but if I was taking a friend or musical newbie to a concert for the first time, I might just choose Lang Lang!

Totally agree with Dulciana on this... smile.gif

I think Lang Lang is a very talented pianist, but i find his movements unnecessary. Yes, you can be over-expressive when playing a particulary moving piece and when nobody's watching, but to always play like that? My question is whether it's just how he plays or him showing off. If it's the latter, then it really outweighs however much technical ability he has.

A concert pianist is, in a sense similar, to an actor. A performer, not just a player of the piano. He needs to excite, stimulate and captivate his audience. Of course he needs to be technically brilliant, no one wants to hear wrong notes and poor dynamics, but on the world concert stage you have to have all this plus the "X Factor", the quality and charisma to succeed in one of the most difficult arenas of all the arts.

Except for the fact that the actor sends his message through his actions and words where as a musician will do it through music.

It depends on what you mean by the ''X Factor'' because personally, his huge movements repulse me, it's melodramatic and distracting.

Every pianists has their own personality... and if they play in a particular way... let it be...

Anyway... it must have been hard work to be one of the top pianists!... ph34r.gif

Hee hee...sorry but Lang Lang reminded me of Mr Toad, from The Wind in the Willows. There is an old animated series (David Jason does Toad's voice). In one episode, he tries to impress Ratty and Badger & Mole by saying he has learnt the piano. Meanwhile , he gets a pianola and Billy Rabbit gets the pianola working by riding a bike( Don't ask!).

Badger, Ratty and Mole are sat ready for the 'performance' and Billy Rabbit is hidden behind the curtain.

Anyway, the faster Billy Rabbit cycles, the faster the pianola goes and the faster Mr Toad has to 'play' and he forgets to play at certain places...and it's all very funny! Mr Toad, by the way, plays like Lang with appropriate arm movements e.t.c.

Must admit, the audience in this clip were laughing at one point aswell.

Even scarier...Lang played the same music...no jesting!! I think it's just a pianola with Billy Rabbit behind the curtain riding a bike.

I don't think I should ever see Lang Lang as I may get thrown out.

Well done Mr Toad.ahhmm...Mr Lang!! laugh.gif rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif

I like the Mr Toad analogy!
I'd thought of a toddler in a full-scale nuclear meltdown sort of tantrum....
The movement detracts from the music for me too. sad.gif

I was wondering what people think about Lang Lang. Some people think he is one of the greatest young pianists we have today. He is definitely one of the most famous worldwide right now, but does he deserve the credit? Many argue though, that he plays with no emotion, just with great technical ability and great big movements body making him 'fake'.

Sure, he moves like he's having a heart attack sometimes but that's what I like about him. There are so many concert pianists these days that they all appear to be the same! Only a small few of them stand out and Lang Lang does this by his unique performances.

Have a look at this. Pretty breathtaking even if people think that he's rubbish. His quirky personality is transferred to his piano playing and it brought thousands of people into classical music.

I was just wondering, how about a heated discussion? Is Lang Lang a fake?

I've just had my cousin staying with me and when I showed him the clip of Lang Lang, the first thing he said was that he reminded him of Victor Borge laugh.gif We looked up some VB clips and I was tempted to post something about him, but it didn't seem right to mock the afflicted tongue.gif laugh.gif

I find your post most distasteful, almost racist. Your IP address is broadcast, remember, and you are on a public forum.

Being compared to an amphibian with bulging eyes and slimy skin is not exactly flattering is it whatever race you happen to be?.

As, I think Dulciana said, (sarcastically or not), Lang Lang himself could be a member of this forum dry.gif . He could be at this very moment in the very depths of despair ohmy.gif having read the deranged, rambling post of Miochy. Maybe he thinks his career is over, finished, terminated !!!

If you can't say something decent about someone's physical appearance then don't say anything at all.

If you want to be critical of the man's piano playing and performance then that's part and parcel of being a performer, being compared to a toad is not.

anacrusis
It isn't racist. It is finding humour in the behaviour of another human being; maybe unintentional humour, but that is all. It is like saying it would sexist to find such mannerisms funny if I had them when playing because I am female - a non-sequitur.

One of my partners in our practice has just read miochy's post and he is Chinese and he says he finds it mildly racist. (I said in my post bordering on racist)

He's a professional man, and is not an alarmist or over reacting, in fact he's one of the most gentle, kindest, understanding doctors' in our team.

Noodelz
Maybe racist was not the right word to use. If one were to be racist, I would have thought that Lang Lang would have small eyes, not big bulging ones ohmy.gif ph34r.gif tongue.gif . The post could be seen as insulting but I don't think Miochy meant to offend anyone.

Just for the record, I am NOT Lang Lang.
