Full Version: Have You Heard Of Lord Berners ?

To reflect my love of obscure British music and composers, I thought I'd start an occasional thread or two devoted to some of the more unsung heroes who have contributed to the cultural fabric of this country.

I therefore give you Lord Berners (1883-1950) as an initial offering.

More information available here: http://www.britishclassicalmusic.com/berners.html

I have a great CD of some of his music (including the witty Diaghilev-commissioned ballet "The Triumph of Neptune" - which featured at the Last Night of the Proms in concert suite form way back in 1993 I think) and it's all good, humorous stuff.

To sum up the enobled one, his tombstone reads:

QUOTE

Here lies Lord Berners
One of the learners,
His great love of learning
May earn him a burning,
But, praise to the Lord,
He seldom was bored.

Have any of you heard of the good Lord and/or know any of his works?

jod and I were there cool.gif.

I can't answer for jod, but this is the first and only time I've knowingly heard any of his music. It seemed OK, but perhaps not the greatest music ever penned, although one critic's dismissal of it as "justifiably neglected" struck me as a bit harsh.

I knew I had heard the name somewhere. Gosh Last Night of the Proms 1993, my first last night!

Alas the little 'D's rather stop us from promming at the moment. One year when they are old enough we'll go. I know matti really wants to but ironically it is Alexander who is likely to behave better. If we drove down one weekend they could sleep in the car going home I suppose.
