It was a terrific concert, I was sat right at the front biggrin.gif

If you miss Wednesday's broadcast it is also going to be on BBC4 at some point, but I don't know what day or date.
earplugs
I was there too. Not at the front but very high up on the left hand side level with the stage. Not a great view but at least I know he has no trace of a bald patch!

It was a great concert!
Oddball
I beleive I was there too, as well as some others from here, if this is the right concert! smile.gif

It was marvellous.
nicki_flute
Wow, Amanda, earplugs, we could have met you, there was a whole group of us going (Jane, Nat, Helen, Oddball, I)

Glad all of you enjoyed it- sorry I wasn't able to come. I'll look forward to watching/listening to the broadcast on Wednesday.
AmandaL
Going to get a friend of mine to record it to DVD. I have a horrid feeling I'll be on TV due to wear I was sat ph34r.gif stage right, front row and as good as on the platform. Should've taken me' violin.........
sarah-flute
Will look for you! wink.gif smile.gif
benjaminja
Really enjoyed the programme. Didn't know Sinfonia Concertante was being played - one of my all-time favourites!

Some observations:

I was impressed that Mr Vengerov was not afraid to use the open E string most of the time in the violin concerto. A lot of people might disapprove but it was wonderful - kept the whole thing so simple-sounding, somehow.

His vibrato is interesting - whole arm seems to move! Whereas the violist (Mr Power) had more of a wrist vibrato - and what long fingers!! blink.gif Both their instruments looked beautiful - what sounds they did make...

It is going to be repeated on BBC4, but I don't know when. Suggest you check out the Beebs online TV listings.

What on earth...?

I've just had a look at the proms website and the programme was listed as:

Violin Concerto No. 2 in D major, K211 (21 mins)
Sinfonia Concertante in E flat major, K364 (30 mins)

interval

Violin Concerto No. 4 in D major, K218 (22 mins)
Symphony No. 29 in A major, K201 (23 mins)

In the televised version, the second half only had Symphony 29 in it; was the second violin concerto cut out of the broadcast version?
benjaminja
ohmy.gif No, the second concerto was at the beginning. There was no 4th concerto. What a nuisance, that's one I've played (well, the first movement!). Would've been great to see how MV plays it.

Gosh, 3 concertos in a concert and he still had the energy to conduct a symphony afterwards...! blink.gif
sarah-flute
mad.gif

Is it still on listen again?
YetAnotherPianist
So for those who went to the real thing, did he play a both concerti?

Prom 40 is still on Listen Again on the Proms website Sarah, if you've not listened to the Prom yet - I believe it'll be wiped at the end of the day though.
sarah-flute
Oooh well reminded - thanks!
bohemian
Yay! SO glad it's being repeated - thanks for pointing that out biggrin.gif

Is anyone here going to the Mendelssohn violin concerto prom? It's on the 26th.
sarah-flute
No, but I'm envious if you are: who's playing it? Love that concerto. Played in my youth orchestra with an exceptional young soloist years ago biggrin.gif

Oooohhh it's Nikolaj Znaider wub.gif Lucky you!

Tall dark and handsome and an exceptional player...a bit more Kreisleresque than the current wave of soloists we seem to have around. Certainly comes in fairly close after Maxim in my ratings.

BTW anyone see Vadim Repin play Sibelius so wonderfully last night on TV, and followed by a tremendous Bass in the Shosti 13 (Babi Yar) Mikhail Petrenko ( I think, he was standing in for the advertised soloist). Wonderful concert, would like to have been there for that one too.

Hmmm 3 favourite violinists in a little over a week!

Oh no! What TV channel was it? Missed it. *cries* I rarely watch TV so if no pal of mine e-mail me, I'll miss them. sad.gif

I do love Znaider wub.gif His playing is out of this world (to me, anyway, as I opined to VN's teacher). But no, he isn't just TDH, he's actually a bit chubby. "Chubby and really adorable ... like a teddy bear" was how VN once put it. biggrin.gif

It will be on BBC 4, but don't know when. They will probably say in tonights prog.

*goes to check Radio Times*

It's on live next Friday

And next Sats Prom (Shaham and Stravinsky VC) will be on BBC 2.
Tess
Sorry, don't get it. blink.gif If Nik Znaider is playing on Sat 26 how can he be live on tv (or is it radio?) on Fri?

By the way, does anyone know any interesting violinist playing in London this Oct/Nov? It happens to be our birthdays. smile.gif

Znaider is playing Mendelssohn on Fri 25th
Shaham is playing Stravinsky on Sat 26th

Further upcoming string delights include:

Zimmerman / Szymanowski on 2 Sept (beeb 2)
Kavakos / K 216 late night prom on Mon 4/9 (not on TV)
Han-Na Chang / Shosti Cello no 1 on 5/9 (beeb 4)
Bell / Bruch on 7/9 (beeb 4)

And the last night Vik Mullova plays Prok 2 - in the first half so will be on beeb 2

Ditto to all that! I'm very excited - never seen it live before (or him) and as I'm studying it, it should be quite an experience. We're promming it so we'll get to be right up close as well biggrin.gif Since we plan to be there before midday unsure.gif

Tess, the Philharmonia have a number of really good violinists playing with them this upcoming season - they play all over the country, that might be worth looking into.

The first time I saw Znaider was in Paris. I had gone to hear Maxim play the Saint-Saens but he was poorly so Znaider stepped in at very short notice to play the concerto.

I am sure there were several people there who had not bought a programme who were convinced they had seen Maxim!! People were saying "I didn't realise he was so tall! I always thought he was short"

I was of course a tad disappointed to go all that way and get a substitute, but as substitutes go he was more than acceptable. Have seen him several times since and he has never disappointed! He is one of the few I would travel to see.

Thanks very much, Jane. smile.gif smile.gif We will check the radio and tv this Fri and Sat. for them.

Znaider and Shaham are unmissable to us. We looked at today's papers/radio cum tv mag, and basically, all it says was BBC Proms at such a time in a tiny column without any details whatsoever! ohmy.gif

His last movements in particular were just superb smile.gif Does he have a CD of the Mozart concerti available? I really enjoyed the whole performance, often with Mozart there is something objectionable even with the very best players, but Vengerov's was very pure and clean. Just...well, faultless, I suppose. He's gone right up in my ratings biggrin.gif
Anyone else like how he didn't try to conduct the orchestra too much, just allowed them to get on with it? Conductors arse around so much and half the time it's so unnecessary, I thought his approach was a good change.
Tess
I wouldn't put it quite like that, Bo, but yes, you are right. He just allowed them to get on with it - rather natural and humble like a non-interfering team player - and yet, boy oh boy, they did a fantastic job, didn't they? biggrin.gif

Not yet but is in the process of recording them all with same orchestra from the Proms. They will probably be released next year sometime.

I believe he is also including 364 and 190 in the set (and I hope he plays both parts!!!)
sarah-flute
Oooh that'd be worth looking out for.

That cadenza truly was incredible - it almost sounded in parts like two instruments being played. Quite fantastic.

Having now seen a bit of his conducting, I agree with bo, it's nice how much he trusts the orchestra to get on with things and seems to concentrate more on detail and nuance, that's the best way I can think to describe it!

Well I'm not sure how much Mozart was in there compared to Bach / Ysaye, but it was truly virtuosic, and at times seemed to include all the orchestral parts at once! I'm sure Mozart would have approved though. The bit that had my jaw dropping was that bit at the end where he was trilling on a continuous bow, but adding a rhythmic pulse on a lower string at the same time. He must have just dipped the bow to the rhythm to catch the double stop and release it, while keeping the trill going on the other string...if you see what I mean.

*goes to watch rerun of video on slow play*
sarah-flute
Yes, I know which bit you mean - I wasn't sure if there wasn't another violin playing with him at that point, I couldn't imagine how he was doing it....!! I'm going to have to look again...

Nope...all on his own I can assure you. He does a similar thing in his Beethoven cadenza but the pulses are regular (like the timpani beat at the beginning of the concerto) which is hard enough. Doing it to a rhythm is just plain showing off laugh.gif
