Just found this cool little website, don't know if any of you have seen it before. Basically, you add gabbly.com/ in front of any website address and it opens up a little chat room where you can talk to other people who might be on the site. So for this website, the link would be http://gabbly.com/forums.abrsm.org. So we can chat to each other. Give it a go if you want.

Cute biggrin.gif
But, forgive me if I'm stating the obvious, are we not already in an internet chat room?! blink.gif
Oddball
I can't get it to work!!
sbhoa
Too bad... we are having fun in there

Anyone else want to join in?
meerkat
It's just opening the forum webpage for me.
La_Chopiniste_
Wait a little and a small chatroom will appear .
Trebor
Few things I've learnt:
-It won't work if you're using Opera.
-You can read what was said for some time before you entered chatroom, so don't insult people thinking they can't read it
-You can be impersonated, so be careful
-You can browse forums in background, but don't use the refresh button

Other than that it seems a very nice little widget smile.gif
meerkat
It doesn't like firefox, either.
Trebor
It's working fine in mine. Are you using the latest version (FF 1.5)
mwl1
I've got firefox and it's ok with me.
meerkat
that's strange. I'm pretty sure i'm up to date. And I got a message saying that the platform didn't support firefox. I think I'll have another go.

I've got a feeling something like this could kill a forum...
sbhoa
Maybe the novelty will wear off.
Good if you want quick answers though
Oddball
It is, and it's a great idea, I agree!

The messages on the forum are, well, more permanent on the forum than on 'gabbly'. Agree with sbhoa, it's useful if you want quick answers. smile.gif
sbhoa
you giving it a try barry?
katyjay
It might just curtail CISD. Or perhaps not.
deviless
is it just my computer, but on the forum page behind the gabbly thingy, its VERY slow...

I've had a very quick look - it's quite useful - but if the forum's busy and gabbly's busy, it may be difficult to follow. I'll use it occasionally. smile.gif

The what? huh.gif i'm soo confused....
barry-clari
If you know someone's on the forum/gabbly, and you want an answer to something quickly, as I said before, then it's useful. But generally, and probably much to Mr Bouffant's pleasure laugh.gif , I'll continue to use CISD for chat!
andante_in_c
Why not use both? I am. smile.gif

See above answer Andante. smile.gif I guess it'll take a bit of getting used to....

I'll visit the gabbly area occasionally. smile.gif

I've now had a more decent play around with gabbly. To all intents and purposes, it's a chatroom not unlike MSN and the like. Relatively easy to use, and a useful little addition to the forum.

I wouldn't worry about it killing the forum. Every board I use has a chatroom. It's a different experience using chat from using boards. It usually enhances rather than damages boards, and often produces more activity.

Most of the queries that we post, or conversations we have aren't suited to simultaneous chat. For example, if I have a guitar query, there are maybe four people on the board who can answer it. I'm not going to do that in a chatroom, because there's minimal chance of any of those people being online at the same time as me.

Simultaneous chat is much more about chit chat.

Very eloquently put meerkat. smile.gif

I think the gabbly site and the forum are more likely to run concurrently rather than gabbly 'taking over' the forum board. smile.gif

but no one posts guitar queries on CISD, will that thread go away now?

What a fun idea!

& I agree with meerkat, in my experience this won't kill a forum.

not quite my point.

but i really doubt it. They serve different functions. Go to any board with live chat, and you'll see that generally, there's still plenty of chit chat.

You may find that things slow down for a day or two on teh chit chat threads, but it won't last.
sarah-flute
Bumping this cos I for one had forgotten about it.
