I have several piano pupils about this standard, whose sight reading could improve, especially their sense of key. For my younger ones, I use Pauline Hall's "Piano Time Sight Reading" books, which are excellent but they only go up to grade 2. I'd like to know any good sight reading material for the higher grades. So many of the books available seem very dry and boring. Also I'd like to know if there are any sight-reading books for the treble clef only, that I can use for my keyboard pupils who use treble clef and chord symbols. Most of them can't read music at all, as a lot of the published keyboard music has letter names written on, and you don't have to sight-read for the London College keyboard exams, but I'd like to teach some of them how to do it this coming term. Thanks!

Try the Right @ Sight books. Each graded book is progressive within itself, and I've found my pupils much more likely to practise their sight-reading since I started using these. They're told to do a few a week and tick them off when they're done, then we do a couple in lessons. So they feel like they're "progressing" as they move through the books.

For keyboard players, I use the Trinity specimen sight reading tests. I also write my own and print them out. Perhaps you could try that?

For piano, I use the Paul Harris books. These are very good, as it suggests how to sight read and aren't purely exercises to play.

My teacher uses Right@Sight, they're good.

Also check out the sight-reading on www.practicespot.com, you can print out masses. There are two lots of sight-reading, I forget which is for piano though.

I don't play the piano, but I use the Paul Harris "Improve your sightreading!" books. I found them really useful when I was doing grade 4 and then got nearly full marks. In a not very scientific way to show that they work, I didn't use them for grades 5 and 6 and only just scraped a pass in sightreading. No either my sightreading just got massively worse, or the book swere really useful at grade 4. I highly recommend them.

The other thing that you can use once you have gone through the "Improve your Sightreading!" books, is the specimen book that the ABRSM produce. That can also be quite useful.
