Hey! It varies depending on which board you're on, so you need to find that out first. Edit - sorry confused you with someone else!

Coursework: You have to record three pieces of coursework. One has to be a piece of your choosing and two have to be compositions. One of these compositions has to be an ensemble. Each compositions needs to be based on a different Area of Study. The Areas of Study are:
  1. Repitition & Contrast in Western Classical Music, 1600-1899
  2. New Directions In Western Classical Music, 1900-
  3. Popular Song In Context
  4. Rhythms, Scales and Modea in Music from Around the World
Exam: The exam (which you will take in Year 11) is a Listening & Appraising exam. You have to listen to 12 extracts (3 from each Area of Study), and answer questions on them.

Both about Grade 4/5 standard for maximum 'difficulty' marks
- 1 solo piece
- 1 ensemble

1 composition : 25%
- Free choice
- Annotation of composition

Integrated Assignment
Perfomance, Composition, Analysis combined : 25%
- Compose a piece of music to one of four given briefs
- Perfom/record it
- Answer questions on it in a 30 minute exam

Exam
Listening exam, 1 hour 45 minute : 25%
- Questions on different areas of study
- Level of theory generally around Grade 2, although cadences are covered
- Questions range from identifying the period of an orchestal piece by ear to naming the effect used on a guitar in a piece of pop music

Theory is generally about grade 2 level, and I think the expected level for performance is grade 3.

2. New Directions in Western Classical Music:
-Mininmalism
-Serialism
-Experimental
-Electronic

3. Popular Song in Context:
-Blues
-Reggae
-Musicals
-Club Dance Remix
(although Brit Pop is being added to this section - i think it's replacing blues)

4. Rhythms, Scales and Modea in Music from Around the World:
-Gamelan
-Indian
-African Drumming
-Fusions (eg Bhangra)
