Why is it the fora manages to get so slow, and get connection error messages when it gets into the evening? What can be done to resolve this?
ben_walker446
I was just about to start this topic but have only just been able to get on the forum.

I dunno, is this a particulary busy time when people come on.??

It would be interesting to see how many members are on, and then you would be able to see the busiest times

Not sure Nicki - I'm just glad to be able to go on the net at all after the various conversations I've had with my ISP this week......

(yep, I'm back! biggrin.gif )

It means the server on which the forums are running isn't good enough to support the number of people attempting to access the forums at that time. The solution is either to spend more money on a better server that can cope with the load, or to cut back the forums provision so that fewer posts are made per minute.

(I'll post it in this one too, given it's not empty).

is this why the Forums refused to accept any new members only a little while ago? sad.gif

It has nothing to do with memberships. YAP is right of course and what they clearly need to do is tune the database to cope with the load. Better connection pooling would do it. If MySQL (the current backend) can't cope, then they should perhaps consider scaling up to a proper commercial-grade database wink.gif

And maybe using something more than a 486 as a server....

I think the time has come for the AB to think about upgrading. The forum has become a victim of its own success - and it is annoying when it crashes.

I'm not very computer literate, but if upgrading means closing the forum for a short while so that the changes can be made, or making other changes so it runs more smoothly, then so be it. smile.gif

I'll trade you for your stuffing wink.gif.

One possible temporary solution could be to prioritise non-cafe traffic when the server approaches full load; that way, the moderators don't have to go to the bean counters to justify spending extra money on the extra hosting needed since the number of posts grew dramatically with the opening of the cafe.
Wobby
Did anyone manage to get through to a page when the server seems to crash completely and give you this message, by chance?:

CODE
IPB WARNING [2] mysql_connect(): Too many connections (Line: 131 of /ips_kernel/class_db_mysql.php)

SQL error: Too many connections
SQL error code:
Date: Friday 01st of September 2006 04:43:40 PM

For some odd reason, this only happened in the Viva Piano section...
