Hi what is the difference in sackbutts and trombones?
Ben again. blink.gif

Sackbutts have a smaller bell and a smaller bore size. Also they have a smaller mouthpiece (I think :blinks:) They are just early trombones

Yep, smaller bore, less flare...and quieter. (yay!)
*decamps fast back to woodwind where she belongs*
I think they have some in here, though I can't find a pretty picture on the site.
There is a serpent though.

Louder is much better, who wants a quiet trombone tongue.gif

I did, after sitting in front of a row of them through a performance of something loud and patriotic which my school did back in the dark ages! laugh.gif

If you can't beat 'em (which you never will) then join 'em biggrin.gif

Its not as loud if you stand behind the trombone and are playing it tongue.gif

yes, maybe having a rank of trombone bells pointing directly at the back of my head (did I see the slides whizzing past my ears too?) was not the best thing.
*tries to blow a raspberry, but is sadly without suitable bit of pipework, so no noise*
I don't think I'm cut out for this trombone lark... sad.gif

The word Sackbutt always reminds me of a large American with a very large rear end! biggrin.gif

Even more so if you use the alternative old spelling Sagbutt...

Has anyone ever met a quiet trombone player? I mean a person who is not larger than life, and not one who plays quiet trombones!

My daughter has just started the trombone. (Her second instrument, she already plays the cello). My daughter is very shy. Her teachers at school regularly ask me if she knows how to shout and she always gets put next to a really chatty child (much to her disgust) because the teacher knows she won't chat back. I was very surprised when my daughter said she wanted to learn the trombone but her teacher said he has quite a few quiet pupils and he thinks they are attracted by the instrument's powerfulness because is a way of being noisy without compromising your own innate character.

I was never quiet in personality but when I put the trombone to my mouth I was quiet (probably cause I can't speak and play at the same time). But when I look back at all my old books Written on every page is the word "LOUDER" or "LOUDLY". And now my teacher is going on about all this pianissimo rubbish tongue.gif
