Tenor horn looks like a mini tuba, and a french horn has valves played with the left hand and your right hand in it's bell? Is that right???! I don't play brass, but my friends play some brass.

plus french horns are in a completely different league to tenor horns.
tenor horns are in Eb, they're small, only play in brass and military bands.
french horns play in brass ENSEMBLES, orchestras, military bands, wind bands/orchestras, wind quintets, brass quintet.
also, french horn is generally regarded as one, if not THE most, difficult orchestral instrumnet to play.
but i quite like tenor horns on the quiet, Brassed Off! wont have been the same without them!

am i just being stupid or is ther nothing to vote on here? i dont get what im voting for! yes, i can tell the difference! but how can i click on the name of a horn to say that?!??! a flugle horn is like a big, weird shaped cornet, a french horn is kind of round, and the tenor horn is the same shape as a euphonium or a tuba, just smaller!

All three horns look completely different! I see why some people would get french horn and tenor horn mixed up but a flugel horn isn't even slightly the same shape as the other 2.
I know how u feel frenchyhorn, people call my tenor horn a trumpet!!

Yea I know the difference.... it isn't rocket science really is it?

;-)
The colours in each instrument are very different.... French horn is unquestionably the best... Tenor horn is great in brass banding... Flugel horns are beautiful instruments when played right (ie: not like a cornet or trumpet)

in germany a tenor horn is the same as an english euphonium
an alto horn is the same as an english tenor horn
in america the nickname for the tenor horn is the dog horn - because it sounds like a dog yapping
confused yet?

The American names all make so much more sense! In a brass band the Eb horn really is the alto voice, though 'dog horn' has to be the best name ever!!
to confuse matters still further- how about the English horn (cor anglais)- neither english nor a horn

It gets even more confusing with cor anglais 'cos recent research suggests that anglaise means angled (referring to the angled crook) rather than english - I know I'm an anorak but i can't help it!

lol- I knew that- 'cor angle' (with e acute) as opposed to 'cor anglais'- but it's still confusing for those who don't know!

apparently there's some music for horn quartets... does anybody know what it is/where i could get hold of some?

There are loads of horn quartets out there- check the Paxmans website and you can order them online- www.paxman.co.uk
There's a really cool set of quartets, I can't remember what they're called but they come with a little book for each player. It's so teeny and so cute! and there are loads of them in it, varying difficulties. You can definitely get them in paxmans, I'll check with my teacher to see what they're called.
if you're really really REALLy ambitious you could always think about the Schumann Konzertstuck........!!!

Hi cheeble!
I think those wee tiny quartet books are called Rubanks Quartet Repertoire and you have to buy each horn part separately (only £3.50 each though). You can buy the score from Paxmans as well. Mozart wrote a beautiful quintet for horn and string quartet too- that could be fun since you have a string quartet as well, I'm sure it'd be easy enough to find the extra player! have fun!

You need a non-standard quartet with one violin and two violas. The horn becomes a sort of co-leader with the violin.

That's what I meant by 'the extra player'- sorry didn't make that clear!
