Was wondering what everyone thinks as to the limit on what a student can study per year?
Im 33 and preparing for both grade three theory and violin this winter.
Am also studying for a music diploma with the open university.

i think it depends on the individual person. i did a grade 5 exam in March, then a grade 4 and 2 grade 5's in june! and im doing more exams in november. i can cope(i think!) so it depends

There is no limit to what you're willing to study. As long as you can do it, and you're ready to put the effort into it, no one can stop you.

No limit - whatever you feel you can manage.
What does your music diploma involve?

There's no limit. I'm doing g.3 piano next week, g.4 violin and theory and g.5 viola at Christmas.

I think it depends on what you can afford luckygirl!!! I'm 30 and with a family I must admit i've put off a few exams because I can't justify spending the money on them now, it was so much nicer when mum paid for them!!!
As a teacher I think the most any pupil of mine has studied for in a year is 3, usually 1 of them theory. Although thinking back I took grade 8 piano, recorder and theory all in the same term when I was at high school, I guess it depends on how much time you can commit to it.
By the way, i'm also studying with Open University, doing A214 and TA225 (technology of music) this year, with level 3 course next year to complete music diploma, which course/s are you taking?

What if they're one after the other?! Will you mind? Or do you know that won't happen?
I once did Viola G1 followed immediately by Flute G1 - found it a bit much!

I hope it'll be ok at Christmas, only problem is, I have to play for a few minutes to get my brain to adjust to the clef because my viola exam will probably be straight after my violin vice versa, so I hope I won't get in a muddle.

I've only done 1 exam this year- G4 flute. I might be doing flute and violin G5 in the spring next year though, but it depends if i pass the G4 flute exam or not.

Hello. Last year I did my Grade 7 piano and Grade 7 Tenor Saxophone exam on the same day, within 20 minutes of each other!

I did reasonably well, but my piano mark suffered a bit because of it I believe. I ended up getting a high pass for piano and a merit for the saxophone.
So basically, I wouldn't recommend doing two high level exams on the same day, maybe spread it out over the year. I don't think doing a theory and a practical exam during the year is too much though, they compliment each other in my opinion.

I would point out here, although I know it's slightly diferent, how many subjects and exams we have to take for our GCSE's in year 11!
I have 16 exams to do over a month, but 14 of those were during a two week period, so thats two exams, of approximatly (spelling- am useless at it!) 2 hours each per day!
Plau doing all my music practise, revision etc around them.
Interestingly though, when I took my first Science model tests, (two 1/2 hr exams sat at the same time, three times, adding up to 30% of my final grade) I also had my Grade 5 theory the same day. I had to sit the two Science exams in school, then leave early to get to my theory exam, and take that.
It was a right palava, and I was terrified there would be a clash, and I did far better in the science modules where I didn't have to revise music theory as well!

I guess I normally do about an average of six a year, two with each session- but sometimes less.
