I have a slight problem: unexpected, but rather nice. ohmy.gif smile.gif

One of my recorder students has got through to the final of our local Young Musician competition. I'm delighted for her, and want to be there to support her. Unfortunately it's on Saturday 24th March at 5.30 pm. Would it be possible for me to do the earlier part of the day and then slope off? I wouldn't need to leave very much before the end, probably 4pm at the earliest.

That's lovely news Andante : well done to both of you. smile.gif

We'll work out a way to ensure the pieces where you're needed are done by 4pm I'm sure : I hope the competition goes well, and that you and your pupil enjoy the experience. smile.gif

THanks, Barry. smile.gif

Anyone else who'd like a composition of theirs to be considered for the CD will need to PM me sooner rather than later now. smile.gif

Hi everyone,

Im terribly sorry about the delay, I've just remembered about this event you were staging at some point. Moreover I do not have notifications for PM's, I just found one as I logged in. I'm sorry particularly because I wanted to provide members with a composition of some sort, is there still time? The message dates back to sometime in January if I saw correctly.

If you still wish for a composition to be submitted, could you please inform me of a vague idea of style/genre and specifically the size of the ensemble I'm composing for? I have stuff for medium sized orchestra or a prelude and minuet for piano but I don't think those would be suitable.

Thanks for all, best

Hi Composing Head

If you are still interested, then yes, there's still time. We will keep the bookings open until 3rd March.

Style and genre - pretty much anything goes. We have about half an hour of music at the moment, so there's room for more.

Size of ensemble - not altogether sure. At least fifteen people on all sorts of instruments - e.g. violins, violas, cellos, clarinets, saxophone, flutes, recorders, drum kit, piano. Optional vocals too. The challenge we are giving composers is to do something that can be flexed to fit the forces we've got. And to bear in mind that we have some very inexperienced musicians taking part, so nothing too complex, please.
Composing Head
Ok, would a string quartet be ok? Since you mention nothing too complex maybe a good key for strings like D or G major?

What do you think?

Ideally we'd like more than strings to be involved (so that most of us can play), so if you can expand it to include woodwind as well, that'd be brill. smile.gif

Look forward to seeing your offerings CH. smile.gif

Folks, please do come and support this new venture from the forums events team.

Twenty quid gets you a day of music-making, playing in ensembles to record a CD of compositions by your forum friends.

And you will receive a free copy of the CD afterwards (once the final version has been produced).

For those of you who can't make it on the day, the CD will also be available to buy (or indeed, for the participants to buy if they want another copy) at the very reasonable cost of £5 each.

Currently 9 people have signed & paid up. 3 have asked for solos in CWB but I haven't had their forms and cash yet.

We need to find another 5 people to break even.

So don't be shy, come and join us.

Cheers

The nearest train station's Egham, but it's a bit of a way. However transport will be sorted for anyone that needs a station pick-up.

Hello, just to say I've almost finished with everything, IF this is still happening. I just have to put the last bit in and perhaps make it a bit more legible (I think I might need someone to edit if that's ok).

I read up a bit on who was playing what through previous pages (I thought that they were ordered by people's first instrument, second instrument etc. i.e. Bob : violin, piano, banjo) so here's the ensemble I came up with (apparently loads of people are playing a wind instrument):

2 Flutes, 2 Oboes, 4 Clarinets (er..), Piano (tune), 2 Violins, 1 extra violin for the 'Farcito' (acting a bit like a viola, sorry about that), 2 Cellos.

That's 14 people overall. I hope this is allright for you guys, and also it isn't too difficult at all (as far as I can tell) but at least the piano player needs to be decent. Hard to explain. Maybe there is somewhere to upload an mp3 and/or the unfinished score (PDF) so people can get an idea of what it's about. I will try Sibelius music but it doesn't accept unfinished scores and it takes sometime to be approved.

Anyway, all this assuming the event is happening, there are enough players to cover the roles and the piece is playable for the standards you have.

For everyone's benefit I will let you know what's happening 'behind the scenes' here 'chez' barry-clari.....

As stated in the quote above, I'm working through the various scores here. Three pieces are now ready to play. I'm working currently to modify a fourth. The fifth (CWB) will be started once I know the full cast list for the 24th. The sixth is currently sitting on my Sibelius programme unmodified, and I'm awaiting a seventh score.

Any other potential composers must get copies of their pieces to me or katyjay by the 3rd March - any later and katyjay and I won't have time to check/modify the scores.

Instrumentation has needed to be changed in some cases to suit what we'll have willobie. Have got permission for the composers to do this. My scanner also sometimes misreads things. For example, in one score, the flute part was given an A below the stave to play......

Modify??? blink.gif blink.gif

Instrumentation has needed to be changed in some cases to suit what we'll have willobie. Have got permission for the composers to do this. My scanner also sometimes misreads things. For example, in one score, the flute part was given an A below the stave to play......

Sounds creepy - like genetically modified music... blink.gif biggrin.gif

Do we have any idea how many people there are yet?

Double figures willobie : on or soon after the closing date, I'll let performers know the 'state of play'. By then I should, all being well, have prepared five of the seven pieces for performance. Ideally, by the closing date, I only want CWB left to do, but I have a feeling things like the day job may get in the way!

I will say here, thank you to all of you who've sent compositions to me. smile.gif I'm keeping them all, I think it'd be nice in the future to have one or two original pieces in future forum concerts, and I will talk to various forumites about this in the weeks to come. smile.gif

When is the closing date for players? I'm afraid I've been going round in circles especially as I continutally get colds ph34r.gif

There is still time to sign up for this. There are still places in all the ensembles.

It's going to be a fantastic day performing and recording compositions by your fellow forum-members.

Only £20 to participate (including a copy of the finished CD). CDs will be available to purchase afterwards for £5 each.

Having discovered last night that you're a bit short on the bass line for this, I spoke to my partner last night about coming and he's said we can 'make a plan'. Not sure what that might be, but it looks like I can make it after all.

I can bring a cello and a trombone. Any help?

I don't suppose anyone's going past my part of the world and able to give me a lift, as that would be a BIG help.
