No. Violas have funny strings and funny notation. I played a violin. Proper strings and proper notation smile.gif

Anyway, I think you play the odd violin yourself, don't you?

QUOTE(sarah-flute @ Oct 1 2006, 10:18 PM) *

Without wanting in any way to throw spanners into the works: while I am happy to play violin or viola, I'd really like to play flute in *something* - it's my main instrument, and I'm much happier playing (and a trillion times happier being recorded on) it than on strings. Same as most forum events really, I know string players are needed and I'm willing to help out, but when it's being recorded for posterity I'm a bit leary of playing an instrument that I really don't feel terribly proficient in.

That's fine, Sarah. Don't worry, we will need your flute playing for definite.

I don't know about a piece in particular, but I do remember a piece we played when I was a child which used only open strings and first finger... played rhythmically (only crotchets) and with a good accompaniment, it sounded pretty good! With people for whom complex rhythms would not be an issue, it's not beyond the realms of possibility that with suitably interesting other parts, it could work.

One other little point to clear up.

We are now hoping to be able to have a recorder piece as one of the works, and a choir piece. Jo.Clarinet has expressed preparedness to conduct the former, and I'll conduct the latter. Yes please. I'll PM you my e-mail address. Thanks.

Possom, I can probably borrow the violin I used before when I started, before I got my own. It's as cheap as chips, but I put some decent strings on so it's not totally dire.

Looking down the list, I can only see two people who I know play the bass recorder (Suepea and willobie) blink.gif . We'll certainly need at least one more, preferably two, otherwise there may be balance problems. If we have, say, 16 recorder players, I'd probably want a maximum of three on descant, at least three basses and pretty equal numbers after that of trebles and tenors.

I know which recorders are played by those people who have come to the September concerts, but it would be helpful if the people I don't know about could post which recorders they play, if they haven't done so already on this thread (better to post here than to send me a PM, as it's then obvious to others too). smile.gif

Edit - just seen the last few posts which went up as I was writing this. I'd only be prepared to conduct a piece which I had chosen myself, I'm afraid. I've had experience of conducting things when my heart isn't in it, and that's no fun at all! I have boxes and boxes of recorder music here.......

And Boo's got to add Andante to the list, so she'll be in possession of a bass as well.

Boo, I'd like to keep the list we've got as an overall list of participants/instruments/conductors/composers, because we're going to be doing a variety of works, not just yours.

Probably better if you maintain the specific details for your adaptation work on your spreadsheets.

Yes I know, but I think most works (including mine) will be able to include everyone whereas the recorder ensemble will probably include less than half of participants so for clarity purposes I thought it might help to have a subsiduary list (managed by yourself) of the recorder players and their respective recorder types. smile.gif

Actually, I'd hope that more than that would take part in a recorder ensemble. Judging by Forums events we've had, many people can dig out a treble or play a tenor for the day.

We will be buying a recording licence, so that we can use copyright material.

Ideally we'd like to use material by forums composers (which, because they'd given us permission to record, would mean we didn't need to pay for it), but if we don't get enough appropriate material volunteered that way, then we will turn to published flexible ensembles and the like, hence the need for the licence.

Remember, Nicki, that although the bass has 'F' fingering like the treble it plays from bass-clef music, which can take a bit of getting used to if you are normally a treble-clef-only player! tongue.gif

sarah-flute
I quite often read bass clef playing the flute to find more interesting harmony lines in chapel. I think it's OK if you're very secure with the fingerings on an instrument, but while I'd like to have a go on a bass I think I'd be rather nervous about trying to record on one - my recorder fingerings aren't fluent and instinctive enough!
