Full Version: Using A Scanner With Sibelius

I have loads of good song books that I want to sing with my pupils (during class music lessons) but they are always written in such a high range that I find it impossible to teach them!
The clavinova at school doesnt have the handy transpose button but I had heard that if you scan music into a computer and save it in Sibelius it is possible to transpose it like that?!

Is that true? If it is then ill buy a scanner and do this (by keyboard skills arent such that i can transpose any old piece from sight!)

I've got Photoscore and Sibelius 3, and a decent scanner, but I've never managed to get it to scan to a decent and useable standard. If I were you, I wouldn't bother!

I use Sharpeye for scanning (avaiable from visiv.com) which is excellent. (cost is $169) I then convert the scan to a midi file and work on it in Noteworthy. All very easy. I think that it will also open in Sibellius but I don't have that. You can get a trail version for 30 days.

Wouldn't be without it. I scanned a flute duet the other day, converted it to a midi file, then to a wav file so that I could write it to a CD for my pupils to practice along to at home. It can cope with most of the things that I throw at it but it does get a bit cofused with trilplets and demisemiquavers. Also useful for piano parts, just write to a floppy and insert in keyboard.

I've got the same. Once scanned you need to do a lot of work before reading to Sibelius to correct errors and then some more once in Sibelius. I sometimes wonder if it would be easier to just type it into Sibelius from scratch laugh.gif It takes me about an hour to get a decent copy of about 4 sides-ish of music. However this is Photoscore Lite (which comes with Sibelius) and the full version may work a lot better.

Also I do tend to do violin / piano scores (so I can play along with my clavinova), and it does tend to read the piano staves a lot better than the smaller violin staves.

Once its in Sibelius a click of a button will transpose it for you.

so you think it would be a decent investment? going to investigate scanners....and take it from there. A pupil of mine has a wicked scanner....but dont know about sibelius. will begin by getting the scanner!

Thanks people!

its www.visiv.co.uk by the way for that sharpeye malarkey!!

You can get half decent scanners cheap as chips these days so it might be worth a try.

Don't forget about unaccompanied singing, too...

If you already have Sibeliuis this won't be welcome but I've found the Finale Allegro scanning system does work quite well - you do have to do some 'cleaning up' but it os much quicker than typing the whole piece in again....
