Hello i play lead trombone in a big band. The tips i would give is to play loud, and also to swing quavers ect... Also when playing jazz you need to be able to improvise or at least have the confidence to give it a go if you are in a band at all. The best tip i could give you though is to enjoy yourself. I think the whole point of jazz and swing is to have a really good blow and have fun while doing it. Whether you can play the notes or not, you should always have fun because its nice to get away from the classical side sometimes and really let rip! Hope this helps!

Listen to some recordings of famous jazz trombone players start with J J Johnson, Ray Anderson, Curtis Fuller, Frank Rosolino. Perhaps a good recording would be John Coltranes 'Blue Train' where you can hear Curtis Fuller although J J Johnson is your best starting point.

You should learn the blues scale so that it feels easier and more natural to play than your standard diatonic major scale.

Then move onto modes

Start by listening first, join a big band if you can, you can join mine if you live in Teesside, trombone players are always in short supply.

Have you listened to Denis Rollins? He's his own label called Badbone and releases cracking tunes and is really passionate about what he does, I had the pleasure of playing in a workshop concert with him once and he was wonderful and a lovely guy too! smile.gif

I believe Dennis Rollins is a Rath fan, last year i saw Mark Nightingale do a jazz gig even got to have a chat with him at the bar, nice fella and with a very consistent and polished approached to jazz performance, he really made the evening worth while. Its nice to see the trombone playing jazz be-bop without any hang ups to its limitations.

Interestingly J J Johnson whilst for many years played Kings 2B's and 3 B's switched to a Yamaha 691 and stuck with it until he died. I read that in an interview he gave. I'm using a Yamaha 695 but think i need something alittle bigger as it tends to break up when i go supernova on it.

the tips i give you would really depend on how much experience you have already.... but as you probably already know, work on articulation! once you've got that down, you can tackle jazz, no problem.

edit: use LOTS of air, even if you're playing something quietly. while this may seem obvious it appears to be especially important in jazz.
