Full Version: Composer Of The Week Idea

Hi,
Well, as most of you know, I am currently studying A2 music. I need to know composers' dates, when they lived, in what period, what kind of things they wrote and a bit of background about them. So far I have done not much but I thought you could help me.

What do you think to a composer of the week idea? We'd pick a composer, create a thread, and people can come along and post facts about him, recommend pieces of music by them etc. I would listen to different types of music by them, and read up on them also, but it would help me enormously.

What do you think?

Thanks!

Sounds like a great idea Nicki! smile.gif

That sounds a fun way to learn! Where in musical history do they expect you to begin? Baroque or earlier?

Great idea. You choose the first one Nicki and lets go!

Excellent idea, Nicki. The college I teach in has a noticeboard set aside for the Composer of the Week, and I often read it and pick up facts I don't know. smile.gif

I'd still say you don't need to know dates, though - more of an idea of the chronology so you know who was influenced by whom. smile.gif

On my website I have a page called "Have you met...yet." Every few weeks I add a different composer to it. A picture, birth + death facts, why he/she is important, genres composed in as well as silly facts etc. It's fun to research. So far I've done Gibbons, Gershwin, Elgar and Rachmaninoff. Satie is next.

If you lot did it on here, I might borrow some of your ideas! Top idea. smile.gif

Do you think I should do it in chronological order?

I do, because I get asked to name a possible date of composition, and if I know who the composer is, and his dates, I can make my guess even more accurate

It sounds like a good idea; good way to learn and (hopefully!) remember. biggrin.gif

Yes, i think that chronological order would be a good idea, otherwise it would be an easy thing to get muddled up; to be thinking of the order posted but it actually not being correct! Not a good mistake to make! smile.gif

Ok, who was an early Renaissance composer then? Byrd? Dowland? Tallis? Montiverdi?

Look at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Renaissance_composers for list of some early Renaissance composers. I'm not that good with that kind of thing!

I would include Thomas Tallis, William Byrd, Monteverdi, Palestrina and then Gabrieli (bit of a borderline composer from the reniassance to the baroque style). Tallis was born in 1510. Shall we start with him?
nicki_flute
Yes, just what I was going to suggest, I'll create a thread

What a great idea, Nicki, I'm sure all the A Level students will find it useful and I know I'll find it interesting biggrin.gif

Just to point out that Nicki has now started the Tallis thread.Here.

I'm sure she'd appreciate any contributions to it.
