Hi, my chamber group need some suggestions for music. Does anyone know any nice piano trio pieces for grade 7/8? From a range of music eras?

Thanks!

Mozart & Haydn Piano Trios are great although Cellist may be a little more technically challenging part... then perhaps Beethoven's 1st trio. it sounds very "young and fresh" if you see what I mean...

Frank Bridge's Miniatures used to be my favourite for my pupils although these may be a little too easy for your group... Shostakovich's and Brahms may be...

Enjoy playing!

Oooh wow, i've just been listening to a clip of it, it sounds great! Thanks so much, we'll try it!

Oh wait, its the Piano trio in c minor, opus 1 no.3 right?

Oh, now im just getting confused, this has been like, my second edit....I think the one i heard was piano trio no.3 (fourth movement?)What do you guys think of it? Do you think it would be too hard?

Op.1 no.1 in Eb is the one I was talking about. no.3 in C minor is great, too. Mendelssohn's D minor trio (I think it is no.2 of his two trios) has always been MY favourite... 2nd movement - Andante Cantabile - is just so beautiful - and not too difficult.

Haydn's trio which has Gipsy Rondo is great fun to play, too!

The Eb is an excellent choice, more interesting for the 'cellist than most Haydn.

The whole piece is very fine. However, the other three movements are very hard for the pianist, above Grade 8 standard IMO.

Hans Keller reckoned that there were three successful piano trios,* this and the other Mendelssohn (C minor) being two of them. I believe his other choice was by Schubert. His criteria inluded writing that allowed the 'cello to be heard satisfactorily against the sound of a modern piano. Of course, it's not fair to criticise Mozart and Haydn for not achieving this, because they were writing for pianos with a very different and much lighter sound.

I would recommend the Schubert trios... but obviously that requires alot of experience to play well...

So the first thing that Beethoven composed and got published were his trios?
