I have a tenor horn piece that I would like to be reviewed by a profficient player. If you have some time could you please take a listen and let me know what you think.

I'm not a horn player, (my mum plays one) but I really enjoyed it - even through a midi it sounds good! Especially the slow movement, and triplet section towards the end. Some very clever and enjoyable writing. Only one tip: for an Eb instrument sharp key signatures are difficult to play in, whilst flat keys are easier. Prehaps the A major opening would be better in a different key. Apart from that everything seems right for the instrument. As a trumpet player I would love to see a Bb version available!

If it's a midi, why can't I just download a file of it? There's enough software on this little computer already, so no way shall I add yet another playback program to it, especially one from the Sibelius stable.

Bb Version on its way!

Sorry but the midi is for playback only.

Sorry but the midi is for playback only.

I have three programs that play MIDI already.
1) I don't want another.
2) People who load and execute anonymous programs put their computers at risk of virus infections.
3) Safe procedure is to download the data file, using a program that will not execute it automatically; check it for viruses (if you're sufficiently paranoid); and execute it with a program you trust. If you would like me to listen, please make that possible.

I have lost the thread here all I asked was an opinion on a piece. If you have one then please leave it. If not then fair play.

dude that's some good music, only marred by the fact my comupter's horn sounds shockingly poor dry.gif

couple of things:

1) that goes kinda high, i guess a good horn player won't have a problem with it but it mightn't be spot on if someone's playing up there;
2) the score itself needs more space - makes it easier to read and towards the end there were a few overlapping rests.

but yeah, it's really good, i like how you're not just using 'nice' chord progressions but it doesn't sound completely without a tonal centre. that's some good stuff biggrin.gif

kenm, if you'd like a midi file it would be easier to PM boneman instead of posting it in this thread

Thank you for that I will try to tidy it up. I originally write it in Finale and had a few problems changing it to Sibelius. I can do it in a lower key.

It's a lovely piece but it will be very challenging to play well. There's a lot of playing above the top of the stave and although the Gs and As are not too bad (and well within a good horn player's range), the Bs and Cs are extremely demanding to play well and keep in tune with a good tone.

I'd like to see a slightly lower version if that's possible. Thanks.

Hi I have checked through the part and also the piano part. Lowering the key will take both players into a minefield as far as choice of key! I wrote it for a grade 8 pupil so there fore altough some bits may be a little high the piece is pitched at the more advanced player. Thank you for your comments.

Now is there anyone out there that would like to have a go at playing it!!!
Allannah
Transposing down a major 2nd takes this piece to very easy key signatures and makes it a piece that will be a pleasure to play whilst remaining a challenge, keeping a lot of the playing in the horn's higher range but not up at the extreme of the instrument's range.

The high notes in the piece as it stands are at the top extreme of the horn's range and are tiring to play - I write this as a grade 8 player myself. The rhythm in the piece keeps it up to grade 8 standard.

There was a section that put the piano in a lot of flats however!

perhaps you could do two versions: one with an easier horn part, but a tricky piano part, and one with a tricky horn part, and an easy-er piano part. Most piano parts for peices of a grade 8 standard do tend to have a less sympathetic piano part, and key sigs of up to 6 flats are often come across.

Boneman, I don't think you need to do this at all. I have played through this piece and found it very approachable and enjoyable. There were one or two bars I'd need to lok at in depth but i believe the keys you have chosen are ideal for the sound of the tenor horn. Although i am a cornet player first and foremost I find the Bb version lacks a certain "something" and much prefer to ply it on my tenor horn. If you are interested in a few horn players to play it and then maybe review it for you please PM me and I'll put you in touch with some of the up andcoming youngsters (such as the solo horn of NYBBGB who would be delighted to try it out for you no doubt)
