I need my fingers to move faster, smoothly for my G3 violin exam
I'm doing
A1 regaudon and trio
B1 romance
C1 down by the riverside

The A1 is the piece I need to work on.
Has anyone got any tips on how to make the fast part sound better?

Try the 'hooked bowing' technique - it works wonders for any fast passage. Play each note twice, slurring the second note of the (doubled up) sequence to the third, the fourth to the fifth and so on. Do it several times until you can do it at a fair speed. Then try playing it in the normal way and miraculously you should find that your fingers work much more quickly and efficiently.

There's a reason why it works but I won't go into it. Just try it and see what happens!

Just a suggestion but have you tried playing the pieces a bit slower? Why don't you try and play the pieces slower first so your fingers know where they are going and you get to learn the pieces better. Once you have got the hang of playing it slowly, speed it up until you get to the correct speed. Once your fingers know where they have to go, they will be able to play faster and smoother. Remember what you can't play slow you can't play fast.

Sorry, can't really add anything of use to you. But, thought I'd reply anyway! Sorry.

My 8yr old daughter is taking G3 violin (amongst a plethora of other music exams) in 2wks now. She's doing Moderato, Romance and Riverside. Moderato has become fantastic and Romance, was amazingly fantastic virtually from day 1, but Riverside, with its continuous in and out of 3rd position has been much harder for her. The second half she has a fantastic swing action without jeopardising her accuracy but the 1st half is either dead accurate but a bit timid, or full swing, but less accurate fingering. Given she's a serious dancer too, I've suggested she creates the feel of a 20s Charleston, for the piece, but she seems stuck on the dilemma of accuracy versus style for the 1st half. Any suggestions anyone?

I can't remember what I got on my grade 3 violin (or piano, for that matter) - a low merit, I think.

I have a 10 year old pupil who scraped through with 101, but it was all his own fault, he simply didn't practice - even his parents admitted this.

We all hoped it would be a wake-up call for him to put in more effort. So long term has he changed his attitude to practice?...errrr, no. Trouble is, pupils often get away with minimal work at Grades 1 and 2, and it's only when they get to Grade 3 and above that they suddenly realise the cracks are showing due a lack of practice. For some it's an incentive to start working, but not all, unfortunately.....
