I don't know yet- haven't tried any out yet. I've been recommended yamaha or senwick- but I need to play them first!

Try Steinway & Sons. I heard it's good. wink.gif

i agree... i've played on it before and the sound is really very clean and very clear, but buy only if you're able to afford wink.gif

I went to josef's pianos yesterday (near kettering)
there were about 50 pianos there, but my mum wouldn't let me near the grands...
so it was between 2 petrof uprights and a welmer upright.
the more expensive petrof was absolutely GORGEOUS wub.gif
and the less expensive petrof was practically identical to the welmar.
BUT the welmar had money off because it was a bit scratched so my dad is keen to get that one.

so now I don't know what to do!
we're not going to get the less expensive petrof because you can get a similar piano for cheaper.
but the expensive petrof is so much more than the welmar!
my dad wants the cheapest piano, my sisters aren't bothered and my mum doesn't seem to mind but she did say the expensive petrof sounds lovely.
but I'll feel guilty if they spend loads of money....
oh I am so confused! sad.gif
choosing a piano is SO hard.

sorry about this rambling. I just feel I have to tell people about my dilema!

If you think its worth the money, go for the more expensive one. I recently got a new clarinet, and we went for the more expensive model because I could feel the difference and my parents could hear it! Remember, if its good quality it will pay for itself in not being needed to be upgraded, repaired or perhaps even retuned so often (not too sure if that applies to pianos!). And a good instrument can make a real difference to your playing as a whole, not just the tone quality.

i did that with my new clarine too- it was between the less expensive brand new model or the more expensive second hand one but it its was 2 models up (i think). we went for the more expensive one and I'm really glad I did! smile.gif

with the piano- we got the welmer in the end sad.gif
but it still is a lovely piano- loads better than our old battered one at the moment.... so I can't complain!
and when I have loads of money (which will probably never happen) I'll get a steinway! wub.gif
I suppose I can't blame my dad for wanting to get the cheaper one. hes the one thats paying for it tongue.gif (and he doesn't even play piano)

Writing as a parent who plays piano (G8) with a son learning piano (G2) I'm with your dad! We have a very ordinary upright at home but it's regularly tuned and regulated. It makes a perfectly fine sound, though it's not a Petrof (it's not even a Welmer!)

I think if you get used to playing on a reasonable instrument, but not a top-flight one, your playing will be fine but you will find great inspiration when you get to play on fine instruments, such as at concerts or recitals. If you have the best at home, and you find an inferior instrument at your exam, your playing will most likely suffer. Well, that's what I tell myself, anyway laugh.gif

I'm not sure exactly how much you want to spent, but thought I'd add a reply. I have just recently got a Yamaha U1 - it's gorgeous, couldn't reccommend them enough! They are fantastic smile.gif Definately worth a look smile.gif Also, it's refurbished, so a bit cheaper then a brand new one - but still great.

Good point. With clarinets you tend to play your own instrument! (Unless you like catching other peoples colds)
