Don't get disheartened Nicki! Yes, history is tough to get into (we are the top department in the country!) but you have no reason to think you stand less of a chance than anyone else! Think positive!
Last point - if anyone is ever coming up to Durham to visit, do say, and I can give you the real tour to life here!
Vanessa
I feel even more unsure now, after my disasterous Cambridge interview.
Might take you up on your latter offer

Don't dwell on your cambridge interview too much, it only makes you disheartened and distracts you from work and having fun! My cambridge interview went more than disasterously - it was so so bad and a horrible experience. I was incredibly upset and got really dispondant with my work. I think it's terrible how the pressure of them and the attitude of some of the interviewers creates this response in many people. This probably won't help, seeing as I didn't get into Cambridge, but just get on with your life, you've given it a shot, and the fact that you could give it go, it is amazing in the first place. What's more, many people think that their interview went very badly, yet they still get in! So, in essence stay happy, don't worry, don't put yourself down, though be realistic.
University entry really is a lottery these days, and whether you get into one institution or another, is no reflexion whatsoever on your own individual abilities.
Plus, though I'm being hideously biased (and don't won't to offend anyone going/already at/ been to/or dead set on going to Oxbridge) Durham and the other top non-oxbridge unis (depending on your subject, York, Manchester, LSE, UCL and Warwick come to mind) are frankly better! I can't believe i'm saying this on here, and hope no one takes it the wrong way but I feel you get much more of a rounded experience. Yes, we'd all love to go to Oxbridge, but uni is not only about working but about developing as a person, embracing your new independence, getting involved with as much as you want, trying new things, and making friends that will last the whole of your life. And if you're cunning, outside oxbridge, you can still do all this and get a First. I have friends at Cambridge and though they do some of this stuff, the amount of work and compulsory hours of contact time they have is ridiculous, and can take over at times. As my lecturer said upon welcoming us - well done for choosing durham, where you may write 12 essays as opposed to 100 at Oxbridge!
This is just my opinion, so do feel free to contradict me/question me!
And on a lighter note, if anyone does want to visit Durham, seriously do tell me, and I'm more than willing to give you an 'insiders' tour! (vanessa.wilkinson@dur.ac.uk is where you'll find me) Though of course there will be the post-application overnight open days in March. Soooo excited about being in charge of the open day here at John's!
sorry for the ramble!
