How did it go? smile.gif

Already at Uni but just going to do a shameful plug for Durham! It's truly brilliant here, I've had soo much fun I can't believe my first term is nearly over! And there's a million and one bands and orchestras to get involved in, you can really do anything you want!

I see your doing History Nicki - the department here, though odd, is really good and the modules are very interesting! Plus we are officially top for history. What college did you apply to?

Good luck with all your interviews, especially Oxbridge ones, I remember last year being very stressful, but its definitely all worth it in the end! biggrin.gif
miss_tickle_thea
Good luck for everyone's interviews- I feel like a cheat having an Oxford offer already, but also really relieved because everyone is going for interviews soon and I don't have to take part in the general stress level!
freda_bloogs
Here's mine, no replies as yet...
  • French and German Masters - Manchester
  • Combined Honours in Arts - Durham (although I may change this to Modern Languages)
  • French and German - Royal Holloway
  • French and German - Leeds
  • French - Paris (ULIP)

It'll be between Paris and Durham I think...I really don't know! The MML from Manchester looks tempting too...

Cool! Personally, I'm a fan of the bailey colleges (those near the cathedral) but that's mainly as I'm generally lazy and like getting to my lectures in 4 minutes! Trevelyan is nice and the best of the hill colleges. It has loads of music stuff too, maybe that's why you picked it! I have a friend going there next year too.

Good luck anyway, I hope you get an offer! And don't panic if you don't hear anything till march - that's when my offer finally came through! biggrin.gif

Yay! Combined Arts at Durham! biggrin.gif That's what I do, and it's by far the best course here, sooo many people have changed to it this term. I love the lecturers, and the flexibility, so I'd recommed sticking with it, as you've made a fantastic choice, but then I don't know what you want to do! Which college have you applied to?

Oh dear - now I am confused. I was going to email UCAS later to ask if I can change my course selection to Modern Languages. Is it really worth sticking with? Can I do 2 + 2 + 2 easily? (It'd be French, German and Music).

I was just thinking that I'd really want this is in the first year and then probably use up my electives in levels 2 and 3 for more language modules, hence making it into a Modern Languages degree.

Plus, the grade requirements are lower for ML, so it'd be easier to swap when I'm there wink.gif

Basically, help!

If you're at Durham then you can usually change after the first year as long as you've got all the core modules required for the second year of that degree. It's a bit like Oxbridge in that one can study enough to do one of two degrees in the first year and then go on to chose after that. I'd check with the admissions tutor to see which modules are required for your subject, but I wouldn't suspect you'll have a problem smile.gif. Most Durham degrees only require a maximum of 4 specific modules in the first year for the subject, the rest you can do what you like smile.gif (as long as you pass it wink.gif).

Please do check this information with the relevant tutors though before you base you life on it; not sure how similar things are in the arts faculty....

St Chads. Not been able to do that yet myself, still waiting for referees to get on with things.
nicki_flute
Referees can be so slow - keep on at them about it.

I chose Trevelyan, not seen St Chads. Becaming increasingly unconfident about Durham, only 23% of History applications got offers sad.gif

Woooo! I'm liking all the Durhamness in this post!
Sorry about not replying earlier, been rather busy with summative essays *groan*, music concerts biggrin.gif and being interview co-ordinator for my college - showing all you guys around and ensuring you really want to come to durham by the time you leave!

As far as Combined arts goes, you wouldn't be able to do 2 each of music, german and french as there's the core module called Sound, text, and image. I really enjoy this - its a broad introduction to the history of the arts - so it covers all sorts - painting, architecture, literature, music, history stuff. The lecturer is great as well. Therefore you could do this + 1 music + 2 french + 2 german! Hope that helps!

Glad you liked Durham - it is wonderful! Chad's is a nice college, though John's is plainly the best! tongue.gif

Don't get disheartened Nicki! Yes, history is tough to get into (we are the top department in the country!) but you have no reason to think you stand less of a chance than anyone else! Think positive!

Everyone else - though its hard stay patient! This time last year I had only heard from one of my uni's - newcastle - and didn't hear from anyone else to late on in december, january, february and march! It doesn't mean they don't like you!

Last point - if anyone is ever coming up to Durham to visit, do say, and I can give you the real tour to life here!

Trebor
I applied for Physics at:
Oxford - up for interviews 10th-12th
Imperial - went for an interview(ish), find out mid-December
Southampton - visiting tomorrow, no offer
Warwick - only offer, AAB or ABB if I include F. Maths
Nottingham - been invited for visit next year, might not bother
Durham - heard nothing sad.gif

Thank you very much for clarifying that for me, it was useful. However, I have resubmitted my application with a Modern Languages choice instead, as I feel that's what's right for me. Musical electives though - why not?!

They'll come! Be patient! Your friends are doing different subjects and at different uni's I'm assuming so that's nothing to go by!

Though even so, two of us both applied for History at Warwick and she heard in December, whilst I didn't hear till late feb/early march I think! I have no idea how that works, maybe they go in alphabetical order!

Don't dwell on your cambridge interview too much, it only makes you disheartened and distracts you from work and having fun! My cambridge interview went more than disasterously - it was so so bad and a horrible experience. I was incredibly upset and got really dispondant with my work. I think it's terrible how the pressure of them and the attitude of some of the interviewers creates this response in many people. This probably won't help, seeing as I didn't get into Cambridge, but just get on with your life, you've given it a shot, and the fact that you could give it go, it is amazing in the first place. What's more, many people think that their interview went very badly, yet they still get in! So, in essence stay happy, don't worry, don't put yourself down, though be realistic.

University entry really is a lottery these days, and whether you get into one institution or another, is no reflexion whatsoever on your own individual abilities.

Plus, though I'm being hideously biased (and don't won't to offend anyone going/already at/ been to/or dead set on going to Oxbridge) Durham and the other top non-oxbridge unis (depending on your subject, York, Manchester, LSE, UCL and Warwick come to mind) are frankly better! I can't believe i'm saying this on here, and hope no one takes it the wrong way but I feel you get much more of a rounded experience. Yes, we'd all love to go to Oxbridge, but uni is not only about working but about developing as a person, embracing your new independence, getting involved with as much as you want, trying new things, and making friends that will last the whole of your life. And if you're cunning, outside oxbridge, you can still do all this and get a First. I have friends at Cambridge and though they do some of this stuff, the amount of work and compulsory hours of contact time they have is ridiculous, and can take over at times. As my lecturer said upon welcoming us - well done for choosing durham, where you may write 12 essays as opposed to 100 at Oxbridge!

This is just my opinion, so do feel free to contradict me/question me!

And on a lighter note, if anyone does want to visit Durham, seriously do tell me, and I'm more than willing to give you an 'insiders' tour! (vanessa.wilkinson@dur.ac.uk is where you'll find me) Though of course there will be the post-application overnight open days in March. Soooo excited about being in charge of the open day here at John's!

sorry for the ramble!

Oxbridge interviews are difficult - this is true. I had one physics + maths interview in the morning, then 2 subject interviews plus thinking skills assessment test in the afternoon. Interview questions are horrible - they are things that they wouldn't expect the candidate to get the answer in one step. However, what the interviewers do is to guide the candidate through the questions, giving hints when the candidate is stuck. The candidate is expected to fully use the hints given to answer the questions. They will then assess the candidate by their thinking. This is what i think. Apparently, almost everyone thinks the interviews are hard.

And yes, don't think about it after the interviews. Prepare for the next interview while working hard for ur target grades.

Quite true. Some courses at other unis are better. My director of studies said the university is famous for research.

And of course, workload is huge. However, i must point out that this is true anyway when comparing the workload of GCE A-levels to any university's. My friends at Birmingham, Nottingham, Warwick, Imperial, Aberdeen, Kent etc all agreed that the workload is heavier than that of A-levels.

In conclusion, the harder we work, the better results we will get. However, in most of the times they are not directly proportional to each other!

Still nothing for me. I know it's early days as far as applications go, but it doesn't help that every one of my friends has had at least 2 offers already. sad.gif

Start of November. On UCAS track it says 'Last Updated 16th November', so I presume that's the date that UCAS processed my application and sent it out to the unis. I've had 'thank you for applying' letters from four out of the six unis, so I know they've got my application!

Well it's January now, application deadline closing in fast, so how's everyone doing with offers and rejections and interviews etc? For me, very badly. Four rejections so far, including my top three choices. Looks like a year of unemployment may beckon...bring on the cheap cider!

I have all my replies now - 5 offers and a rejection from Cambridge.

I will be putting Durham as my first choice and either York/Warwick/Nottingham as my insurance.

I have offers from Bristol, Southampton, Sheffield (joint) and East Anglia.

Don't think I will be making it to Bristol easily, so probably will go to Sheffield or take a gap year. It's going to be hard getting that B in A level Music.

Well, problem is that there are only 6 paramedic science courses, so if all 6 reject me then there's no hope for Extra or Clearing.
sarah-flute
Matt, is that training to become a paramedic?

Old school friend of mine did that after uni. Again, VERY competitive, but if it doesn't work out, there are chances to do it even if you haven't done a degree in it. Don't give up smile.gif

No you're right Sarah! On completion of the course I'd be a qualified paramedic. The degree is the 'fast' route, as it would only take me 3 years to finish training and get registered.

But if I don't get a place on the course then I'm still gonna become a paramedic, but by the 'slow' route. Will have to start as a transport assistant (driving old ladies to their appointments in a minibus), then progress to ambulance technician, and eventually paramedic. Same result in the end, it'd just take about 8 years instead of 3.

Nicki ~ If I don't get an offer then I will certainly try phoning around on results day.
