I'm working towards my Grade 6, but have found that I've slowed down a bit since doing the Grade 5 exam. I know there are lots of pieces out there to try, but what I'm looking for is a piece about Grade 6/7 level which is a good show piece. I love performing to an audience even if its one person, but the exam pieces are a bit too much off the beaten track.
I need a piece that other people would know well but that would help me also progress, as I'm getting a bit bored with scales, arpeggios and exam pieces (especially scales ph34r.gif ).

Any good suggestions?

Chopin Waltzes in A Minor, and B Minor or his Nocturne (No2) in E Flat

Rondo alla Turca from Mozart Piano Sonata in A K331.

You might manage slow movement of Beethovens Op13 Sonata (Pathetique)

Schubert Moments Musicaux, No 3 in F Minor

Debussy 'La fille aux cheveux du lin' from Preludes Book 1

You could try one of poulenc's novelettes. They're quite simple. smile.gif They sound fantastic, too.

Joaquin Turina's sacro-monte (from his cinca danzas) is quite easy too.

Hero, are you sure schumann's kinderszenen is for grade 6/7? I'm playing it for my ATCL, and it's clearly stated on the list of approved repertoire. Maybe the simplified version? unsure.gif

Not so simple, they have all at some stage been set for Grade 8 !

Too easy for that standard

maybe some of Chopin's Nocturnes, Mendelssohn Songs without words, some of Beethoven or Mozart sonatas... well, it all depends on you... most important is play those you really want to learn and you think is nice... you may seek your teacher's advice if you want... smile.gif

I'll second the suggestion of the Mozart D minor Fantasia - a high quality piece that has been set for Grade 6 in the past. By turns melancholy and chirpy, it's very atmospheric, and with two fast runs, it qualifies as a show piece. Otherwise, I'd suggest some of the Grieg Lyric pieces - perhaps Puck, or Butterfly. Mendelssohn Songs Without Words would be another route to try as well.

The recital repertoire books are nice pieces at a high standard

To Rai Re : Kinderszenen

If you look at each piece, yes. You say it is set for ATCL exam - I think this is because you must play as a whole suite. If you play these 13 miniatures together, there are other elements to consider - namely, the change of moods from one to the next - and judging these timings sensitively is vital for the performance to be successful, I think. rolleyes.gif

I am not a big fan of Schumann's piano music, but Kinderszenen is a gem! Enjoy! biggrin.gif

Plenty of music out there! smile.gif

Mozart : D minor fantasia , the famous sonata in C , k545 (as a whole)
Beethoven: Sonata in Eb , Op. 27 No. 1 , Op. 7 No. 4
Chopin : B minor prelude , Eb nocturne , Ab waltz .
Debussy : Claire de Lune - if you'd like some challenge -
Dvorak : Humoresque

And there are some fab pieces mentioned above as well.

What about looking at the "Real Repertoire" books, published by Trinity Faber. There's Romantic Real Repertoire, Modern R R, etc. There will be one for Grade 5 - 7 - it states the grade on the front cover to give an idea of what level the pieces are at.
