I've been fairly quiet about this since I had no idea how it would go. Anyway, I've only just seen the online result that I got 135 for my grade 8 saxophone - just as I did for grade 8 clarinet three years ago. My breakdown was
Tabasco - 27
Bach - 26
Francaix - 26
and scales 19, sight reading 20, aural 17.
I'm so pleased especially as I am entirely self-taught on saxophone, and took the exam at a difficult time, just as I had started teaching. I have no immediate plans for more exams, though I don't think this will be the last one either!
Also pleased to report teaching is going very well, both schools and private. I also have one Advanced Higher saxophone in the school, so this is great inspiration.

Well done neil. That is a great result.

What did you play for the francaix?
Mambo, Samba Lenta, Merengue. I played the Pambiche as well and I liked it, but didn't like Baino, mainly because of all the jumps and the low notes.
Thanks everyone. If I do another exam it will probably be on flute, but next term could be my first entering someone for an exam. That will be interesting!

Well done Neil, that's excellent! I did the same pieces as you, in the last session (except that I did Pambiche, Baiao and Samba Lenta - didn't like Merengue). I loved them so much that I still play them.

Apologies for taking this thread slightly off topic, but when you receive your first certificate through the post for one of your pupils, I'm sure you'll feel much the same as I did when my first couple of pupils passed grades. Very very happy, and really proud of your pupils' achievements.

Somehow I feel I'll be more nervous waiting for her result than my own. She is hopefully doing grade 2 clarinet next term (private pupil).

Well Done!!!!
Im taking grade 8 sax in 2007 (probably have a go at it in summer fingers crossed). Im just at the choosing pieces stage. Ive got my list C sorted (Scherzando Sax) but Im still contemplating the others.
I don't have any of the music yet, (I still hate the way abrsm publish everything in seperate books rather than just a 'grade book' like everyone else) so if anyone has any thoughts on the current grade 8 pieces, or recommendations then I'd love to hear them.

Hey.
On the A list the Sarabande et Allegro - Grovlez is really nice and also the Bach Sonata in G minor 1020 is really nice too.
The first movement of the Grovlez is fairly straight forward and so is the second movement, with concentration most on the articulation and phrasing of the piece.
The 2nd movement of the Bach looks easy and note wise it is but it can be quite difficult holding the long notes on with a good quality sound, the 3rd movement is alot more challenging and require quick fingerwork and good articulation.
On the B list the Francaix Danses are unusual but quite nice and the Tango and Charleston by Trevor Hold is quite nice.
For the Francaix you have to pick 3 out of the 5 danses. Each danse has it's own difficulties but some are harder than others.
The Tango is really nice and fairly straight foward with the charleston been the most difficult out of the 2 movements.
The Hot Sonate (Schuloff) and the Blues Concerto (Holcombe) are also really nice pieces that are on the B list, but they are very challenging, more so than others on the same list.
I have chosen to do
List A: Sarabande et Allegro
List B: Francaix - 1,3 and 4
List C: Scherzando Sax

Thankyou! Thats helped a lot! I'll probably try and get hold of the Sarabande and make a start on that.
Ive just been looking on the abrsm publishing site and cant find the sheet music. Can anyone tell me where i can get it? Im also gonna need the piano accompaniment.
Thanks again, youve been a big help.
Let me know how your getting on with them every now and then!
