I am very interested to learn about different techniques and strategies that different pianists use for memorising music. I have my own methods but want to explore other ways. I look forward to reading your ideas!

This doesn't really answer your question but may be a useful anecdote.

Our son is playing Brahms Rhapsody Op 79 #2 in a concert tomorrow. He did it about 18 months ago as a G8 piece and has played it a couple of times since then. Yesterday he told us that his teacher wants him to play it from memory on Saturday. He's never played anything from memory. He's a good sight reader and never needed to learn a piece off by heart.

Anyway after dinner I suggested he give it a go. He wasn't keen but tried and it was fine as far as I could tell. I followed the score and he got all the dynamics, articulation &c right. He knew he'd made two mistakes so gave it a second go and got it all right.

He hadn't tried to learn it, but had absorbed it by understanding it and playing it.
