Full Version: Trumpets In Alternative Keys

Does anyone know if there are any rules associated with using different trumpets in the grade 8 exam. The program I would like to perform is as follows:

Haydn Trumpet Concerto in Eb
Hindemith Sonata for Trumpet and Piano
No.6 from the "Well Tempered Player"

In an ideal world I'd play the Haydn on an Eb trumpet and the others on a Bb, but I can't find anything to tell me if I'm allowed to do this or not - I know I am allowed in the diploma. If I can't change instruments then i'll probably play the Martinu sonata for my list A piece (which is for trumpet in C, but I could get away with playing it on a Bb) - I personally think its a bit too similar to the Hindemith. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would, of course, perform all my technical exercises on a Bb.

Thanks,

Richard.

I'm not sure, but I think that should be okay as long as its the accompianments that are transposed, not the trumpet part.

I haven't heard of any such rules, but in any case I suggest you approach the exam board and check with them. That's better than believing anything any of us tells you! I've been able to get answers by email to various queries about syllabuses or general exam matters.
