biggrin.gif biggrin.gif Hi,
For those of you who don't know, I got into Suffolk YOuth Orchestra this seasion (playing clarinet tongue.gif )
I got a letter today, and we are playing Mahler's Symphony No. 1 - I just heard some on the internet and it sounds great!

What do you guys think, and does anyone know if its scored for Eb clarinet/ Bass Clarinet - I read somewhere it is scored for 3 clarinets (3rd doubling bass) and an Eb Clarinet - is this right. If so, I really wanna play the Eb!!!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

thanks, Jonathan

You need 4 clarinets for the last 2 movements

Overall it requires Bb, A, C (practise that transposition), bass and 2 Ebs! The split between the parts varies depending on which set of parts you get. There are exposed moments on pretty much all of the parts. I played this earlier this year and had a ball it was about the only time I've been asked to play louder on an Eb smile.gif

Have fun

Gee my wife was in that orchestra in the early 1960's . Imogen Holst (daughter of Gustav) sometimes conducted them then.

Congratulations on getting into the orchestra to play such great piece! If you need another clarinettist, let me know (I'll try very hard to look 14). In particular, enjoy the klezmer bits after the "Bruder Martin" quotes.

May this be the beginning of a long and enjoyable Mahler journey for you. I'm particularly fond of his second symphony, but won't run away from his first. The woodwind are occasionally instructed to play with their bells in the air - any clues on any other way to play a bassoon?
