I've started a thread for this again because it seemed quite popular last term, and meant that everyone could celebrate in one place instead of starting multiple threads! If you don't want to share results then that's fine - but it's nice to be able to congratulate each other when things go well. Personally - my students don't mind me sharing, and I wouldn't dream of being specific about names or marks anyway.
Today I had a grade 5 theory result - merit. The student and I were thrilled because she has been working VERY hard!
I'm now awaiting 12 practical results, but wouldn't anticipate getting those for a while because they only took place this week.
Anyone else?

Had results by post today for 2 practical exams taken on 23 Nov - 1 grade 5 (merit) and a grade 4 (distinction). Both were fully deserved; the two pupils in question worked really hard for these exams. It was also the first exam that either had ever taken, so extra well done to them!

Couldn't access theory results online yesterday so had to wait for the postlady. Grade 2 got 87% and grade 5 got 92%. 10 practical exams took place today under extreme circumstances - a lorry containing gas canisters overturned on the M5 at our junction and the results were that the surrounding roads were blocked. According to the police it was "the worst ever" traffic jams in our area. Thank goodness for mobile phones - by ringing local students and getting them to come earlier we managed to feed the examiner candidates without a break until the ones from a distance could get through. What a nightmare! Full credit to the examiner - he was so understanding.

Yes, FC, and to add to the tension, 16 of us were due to meet at Clevedon for a celebratory meal for my daughter's partner, who has just got back from Iraq (RAF). We were coming from Weston superMare, Portishead, Bristol, Winterbourne etc. But they all had to get home from work first - some to WSM from Cribbs. It took an hour to get from my house in WSM to the motorway island (2 miles), but guess what - we ended up sitting own to eat only half an hour after we had planned! Still, to put it into perspective, that was nothing compared to what he had put up with in Iraq! All in all, a harrassing day.

There's been some super results. I've got none this session, but I will have next time! I'm proud of them whatever they get. And when two failed (unheard of) last Summer it was really hard, but I managed to turn the situation around.

Well done everyone, and Jo, I've had a few fail in the past too. Sadly one of them chose to give up, but for the others it was the spur they needed to work harder in the future. My grade 5 pianist failed in the summer - a combination of not knowing her scales well enough, and messing up her best piece on the day. She's had another go though, and I'll let you all know how my lot got on as soon as I know.

I had one Grade 1 and one grade 2 clarinet this term and they both got merit. I was really pleased for them both.
My daughter got 130 in her Gr 3 flute exam. She was thrilled... she only changed teachers this term. I was pleased too.... especially as on the exam day, thankfully I noticed just before she went in, she'd been entered for the wrong grade!!!!!

Well done! One of the highlights of my career so far has been a severely dyslexic clarinet student passing grade 1. Yes, it's nice to have high distinctions sometimes - but those aren't always the most exciting moments!
My results arrived just before Christmas. I already knew about a piano prep test (which went really well) and a grade 5 theory (merit). The others were:
3x grade 1 piano - all passed
2x grade 1 clarinet - both distinction
3x grade 3 piano - all passed
1x grade 3 clarinet - passed
1x grade 5 flute - passed
1x grade 5 piano (retake) - passed!
So in total, 9 passes, 1 merit and 2 distinctions. I'm so pleased that everyone got through, and the mix of categories hopefully means I'm gauging the entries about right. I don't think I've ever entered so many in one session before - certainly not so many pianists in one go.

2 singers who got a pass and merit at Grade One (bit lower marks than I had hoped in the pieces but you live to fight another day) and a distinction from my Grade 3 pianist- 141 - nearly died of shock considering she took up the piano 18 months ago and had already done a singing exam in school, Grade 4 AND 5 Theory and Grade 2 piano with me in the last year! Some kids astound you with their dedication, the others, well they keep you on your toes....

I know what you mean about "the rest" - one boy got 100 marks in his exam this term! He should have done a lot better than that, but nerves took over. He is annoyed that his younger sister got a better mark, but happy to have passed!
I had a girl who got 140 for grade 3 saxophone in the summer, and I was astounded - she began the previous Sept but had probably only had a dozen lessons because we mainly do clarinet. She has also done grade 5 piano, theory and singing with other teachers so she is obviously very musical and rose to the occasion! However, her scales weren't very good the week before the exam and I was anticipating merit. It was a nice surprise.

Thanks for your sweet comments - self-belief/esteem has been nestling near the Earth's Core of late..
Although I'm really chuffed for my lot (you see, beating them with a big stick DOES work) I feel a few results were a tad over-generous (must have been the short skirt the Baggy old accompanist wore.....examiner kept winking at me, or maybe he just had something in his eye....?).
However, in particular I'm pleased for a distinction G6 flute - the pupe only squeezed a pass at G5 with another teacher and came to me with zero confidence. Her super mum is terminally ill

Interestingly, several Big Cheeses at Guildhall were heard to say at today's INSET (which was mostly taken up with a presentation of the new Trinity Guildhall syllabus by Nicholas Keyworth) that 'Grade 8 distinction is no indication of a person's ability - we wait until we hear them at audition before we make up our minds'. Interesting...
I mentioned earlier that one of HI's pupils got 127 for Grade 8 piano but HI felt he was really a borderline pass standard (I would agree, having listened to his weekly lessons for a while!). I know this has come up before and no doubt will again, and please don't think I'm denigrating the very real achievements of teachers and pupils - but it can be very difficult persuading a parent that his/her child is not quite as talented as exam marks will sometimes indicate...one of the downsides of our over-reliance on a music exam system in this country, IMHO!

I think Guildhall are right! Candidates can learn to pass exams, with a bit of effort, advice from a good teacher and practice they can be good at doing them. This doesn't reflet their musicality though, and some Grade 8's will be more talanted than others.
For us exam results are important as two of our teachers have never entered anyone for that level of exam before so we need to know the result to decide where to move on to next. I'm not suggesting that will be the next exam, but it should help to work out whether everyone is on the right path.
Over the last two years I've learnt that an exam result is just a record of our daughter's achievement at that moment in time and so many more things are needed to make her a good musician.
Exams are also about performance on the day, I also respect that other experiences over the years have helped build performance confidence, which is also important in an exam situation.

I was pleased with my results (from 10 candidates) this time. But the reason I'm on cloud nine, is because one student got a perfect score in one of her songs (at grade 3 - she is 10) - 30 out of 30! That's a first for me!

Thanks for the mention, Cyrilla. I think Bagpuss’s results speak for themselves (something like four merits and eight distinctions). Exams are not an end in themselves of course – it was also pleasing that the examiner for minor mentioned “intuitive natural musicalityâ€. I don’t think a teacher can create that but they can certainly encourage and nurture it and Bagpuss does, in spades (or possibly in hearts).
I also heartily recommend Cyrilla’s musicianship teaching whether for adults (like me) or children (or anyone in between). I think the intuitive natural musicality definitely runs in that family!

It can also be if there has been a minor problem with the mark sheet; ie something isn't very legible, or there has been an error in the adding up (yes, it does happen!)
