Tenor sax. I think they have a fantastic sound. Can't wait for my son to start playing it, but he wants to start clarinet first!

He is on the right lines.
It is generally considered that learning clarinet before sax, gives better results than sax before clarinet.
The embouchure (lip formation) is different but it is easier to adapt to sax afterwards.

I like the clarinet, soprano, alto and tenor saxes equally for playing Jazz. I find they all give their own particular slant on the music and how you approach playing it.
lizbun
deffinatly clarinet. I love the sound if it isn't TOO high

Tenor sax is the best in jazz in my opinion..it's just great!
barry-clari
Of those instruments I don't play, I do think the trombone is a great jazz instrument. I equally think jazz violin works ever so well. smile.gif

Jazz bassoon is brilliant...

Get a CD of Bela Fleck and The Flecktones if you don't believe me... I think the new one's called "The Hidden Lands" - I really must get that!

Are we talking just front line here? Because there;s just something about the double bass that makes fall giggling into a heap on the floor!! wink.gif
TSax
Double bass is very cool, especially Charles Mingus.

Moving sideways slightly, electric bass isn't bad either - I've been listening to Jaco Pastorius quite a bit recently.

Could I be annoying here and say drum kit?

Picking an instrument I don't play I'd have to say trombone but then I am a trumpet player...
Malone
Before I would have said trumpet, but I have been playing some jazz on Clarinet for an upcoming concert and I just love it. I have really got the hang of the lovely vibrato that goes so well with jazz clariet. Also doing swing - improv. In the Mood and We'll meet again - its brill!! Really broadening my horizons clarinet wise!
flute fanatic
Tenor sax, Clarinet and trumpet is okay too.
