Full Version: Think Of Quitting Violin

Well i'm working towards grade 8 piano now so i don't really have much time for violin. I'm about to take my grade 4 violin exam in March. But I don't want to, I want to take it in July. And I don't feel happy with my Violin anyway. My Aurals are good. So's my sight reading. Pieces, um ok... but scales. Don't even go there-I suck.
I don't enjoy Violin anymore. Now i play Violin half-heartedly. I used to enjot it for the first few grades but then my Piano enjoyment kicked in and i'm lagging behind on grade 4.
I want to know if anyone can help me by enjoying Violin again or recommend a really good piece so i might start enjoying it again.
Ps. I'm a boy, My sister made my board name. mad.gif

I think you mean violin grade 4 in your post smile.gif

Do what you want to do! Playing is for enjoyment. As for the pieces, it would be subjective, but get some music you'd enjoy to play, whether it be something for fun like Disney or a piece off a grade list.

Do you play in an orchestra or something?
You might find that doing this revives your interest in playing violin. And maybe forget about exams and just have violin as a social instrument that you play in groups.

Sorry to hear things aren't going so well for you.

Why don't you like violin? If you can find a particular reason, then maybe you could also find a solution. Maybe try some new music......

Good luck and hope things improve!

I play in an orchestra. Sure it's fun but the pieces aren't challenging. And in my orchestra we play the same peices every year huh.gif

Try to think how you would feel if you quit.
If you would feel relieved then maybe that's the best option.
Nothing to stop you picking it up again later in life if you want to and if you've found that piano is more 'your' instrument then that may be enough to satisfy you.

I used to be like you, in fact i still am. I'm doing G8 piano and G7 violin and i often (sad to say) neglet my violin because i enjoy the piano more but perhaps you should find a piece to drive you on? When I get bored of an instrument, just generally fed up i find a new piece to divert me. Soemtimes i feel that playing the same few pieces over and over so tiresome and look at some other pieces as well. Obviously you want to keep playing your exam pieces as well!

Not necessarily.
Maybe it is being tied to doing exams that is part of the problem.

Try doing something really FUN! How about some tango music or some lively baroque, eh?

If the thought of the exam is making you feel as though you want to give up the violin, don't take the exam. Start playing some pieces you enjoy or look at some totally different repertoire and use this to inject some interest and enthusiasm back into your playing.

Failing that take a break from your violin for a couple of months. Just being away from the instrument for a while can be enough for you to go back refreshed and ready to learn again. You'd be surprised how many professionals have bouts of "lack-of-interest and I don't want to play anymore" syndrome. Taking a bit of time off is frequently the way to re-inspire oneself.

Oh boy, we went on a 3 week summer holiday a few years ago and I decided not to take my clarinet with me.

Never again!! Pure agony.

One thing many people notice is how much you mysteriously improve by simply not playing for a while.

It may have something to do with your brain subconsciously consolidating information and re-processing it without you realising. Yep, my wife's a neuro-biologist!

My advice would be to stop playing the violin and work hard for your piano exam. I'm willing to bet that you'll eventually come back to the violin feeling refreshed and perplexed at how easy it seems.

Also, I always feel a little uneasy when people keep going on about grades and exams. It's perfectly possible to learn an instrument without ever taking an exam - or even having proper lessons. Some people seem obsessed with them.

I play violin and piano but I haven't always loved both. You get more enjoyment out of playing when you're on higher grades, so I'd say stick with it. Also, I sat an exam about 2 weeks ago and I felt exactly the same way about it as you did - pieces,sight-reading and aural fine but scales were like 'woah there chicken eyes!'
but I went and did the exam and it was fine [I haven't had my result back yet though! ha!]

Anyway, if you want something to revive your enjoyment, I agree with sboha. Playing in an orchestra is fun. I love it... [even though I can't play the pieces most of the time haha] biggrin.gif

Dear PassionateMusicLover (or whatever your real name is), let us know what kind of music you like listening to (classical, folk, musicals, jazz, you can play just about anything on the violin except rap!) and perhaps we can suggest something that you would enjoy playing. The great thing about the violin is that almost every culture has a violin-like instrument going back centuries, so if you stick with it there is a lot of exciting music to discover.

If you like the idea of sitting in a room playing on your own then keep up the piano. However if doing things with likeminded people appeals then keep it up with the violin! biggrin.gif
