What are you playing? My favourite is Sleigh Ride when I've had to juggle different sticks and bells.

Strange, isn't it? A lot of the fun of percussion seems to come from having to play lots of different instruments in the same piece. Maybe it's because it gives us a chance to show off biggrin.gif

You're probably right on that! Variety's always good!

Not my business to comment on the general situation, but learning kit could prove to be very useful. There's always going to be a demand for good kit players.

Absolutely...

I'm the only drummer in the Lower 6th at college... So now that about 20 people all want to record various songs for their Music Tech projects, I'm being asked to play on almost all of them! 'tis good - better than no work, and will help with the old self-promo stuff!

I agree...there are surprisingly few kit players. Ah well, all the more for us drummers to do! It keeps us busy!

Quite rightly. Good kit players are like gold dust and deserve all the employment they can find.

I really don't understand why there is such a lack of kit players. I'd think it would be more popular.

I don't understand this either! At my daughters school there's a waiting list for kit, it's about the only thing that's full.

At my school, the only free spaces for music lessons at the beginning of this term were for percussion!

Is it Percussion or Kit at your School DrumKat? To my knowledge it's oly kit offered in our local school for Percussion you have to go to the Arts Centreto get lessons.

Our Music Service are running a Rock and Pop Day tomorrow.

The teacher does both percussion and kit, so you can choose which to do. It is an all girls school...maybe this has an effect?!

Your school must have a really good Music Department! All the larger tuned percussion instruments and the Timps are stored at the Arts Centre for use with Concert Band and Orchestra.

Possibly although it's my daughter and another girl who play the percussion in our Youth Orchestra, they both play kit also. Infact when I think about it quite a few of my daughter's friends play kit. Maybe it's more of a girl thing round here. I'm going to a performance later today, a Rock and Pop workshop which is part of a series of workshops the Music Service run, I will let you know how many of the drummers are boys.

As promised ! 15 drummers, 3 of whom were girls. Only 4 kits so a bit of a disaster from the outset. None of the girls got to play the kit. My daughter was mad as she only played Cow Bell and a bit of Tamborine, one of the others switched to Guitar and the other Sang. There were two boys in the advanced group who both got to play kit. Strange it's my daughter and her friend that play in Orchestra and often end up improvising as the music is missing.

The music department is really good, but what's the point in having a load of percussion instruments, if there's nobody to play them!

There isn't! There's just a lack of decent ones...

Honestly - there are loads of cr@p drummers around! It's finding a good one that's so hard!

At my school, there is a genuine lack of drummers. Then again, the drummers we do have aren't exactly great, often due to a lack in confidence, with them preferring to play cymbals or bass drum in the junior wind band!
